Biss uses the pain scale, a medical device, as both topic (something to write about) and an instrument (something to write with). Choose a similar device an index, a scale, a system of measurement, a form used for rating, ranking, or ordering and write a similar essay one that imitates the style and structure of The Pain Scale and one that thinks similarly about the way we know and understand ourselves and others. If the scale is your own, for what purpose did you create it? Is it an anti-scale?
Does the measuring system favor some over others? For what purpose, or to what end?
Your imitative piece should create an argument through examples i.e., argue through inference and suggestion. Like Biss, you should leave your reader pondering ideas and asking further questions of their own.
In order to meet the requirements of a Biss-like piece, you should have the following elements:
1. At least 1 source representing author research (the amount of research in Biss is extensive, but it’s woven in with a light hand)
2. Personal narrative
3. A strong, personal voice that uses Ii.e., the essay is NOT meant to sound like a clinical report
4. Visual representation of the scale/measurement
5. Commentary/critique about the nature of the measuring system
6. Open-ended questions that raise issues for the reader to contemplate
7. At least one anchor text (can be literature, psychology, philosophy, history, etc.) that reappears throughout the essay (Dante’s Inferno in Biss) and adds weight to the author’s argument/commentary
8. Chunk/thread organizational pattern
Essays that wish to go beyond the above requirements may include:
1. Additional research
2. Additional visual or multi-media elements w/ section on Final Work in Proj. III Portfolio
3. Inclusion of, and commentary on, additional measuring systems (Beaufort Scale/ zero-infinity)
