The paper should be neither a synthesis of other historians? writings nor a compilation of information taken from secondary sources. Rather, it must be an original work of your own. The research paper must address a significant topic, one that is intellectually sound, rigorous, and relevant to major questions that concern historians. Put another way, the research paper should be about something that matters; you should strive to say something meaningful and revealing about the past.
Each section of HIST 300 deals with a different area of history. Ours, of course, is about Mexican history. Conducting original research in this field obviously entails several challenges, not the least of which are issues of accessibility and language (the vast majority of primary sources are located in Mexico and they are written in Spanish). For these reasons, I have identified several sets of primary sources that you can use in your research. They are copies of original historical sources, written in English, and, for the most part, typed. Institutions in the United States generated the documents, for instance, the White House, the State Department, and the CIA.
The primary sources have been made available by The National Security Archive, which is an independent, non-governmental research institute and library housed at The George Washington University. Its Internet archive contains a variety of sources, including declassified documents that were obtained through the Freedom of Information Act. More information about the archive can be found here. The archive contains several collections of historical documents about Mexico. These have been assembled under the directorship of Kate Doyle and form The Mexico Project.
