Week 1: During Week 1, we begin to focus on the business communications environment, especially the writing environment. We also consider today’s high-tech, globally-oriented, and diverse business communications environment, and how writing and other communications skills are important to workers and managers.
Week 2: During Week 2, we consider how to effectively communicate in a diverse and globally-oriented economy and society. Recognizing also that most writing in organizations is a matter of teamwork, we?ll consider useful concepts and some practical techniques for teamwork, especially in writing tasks.
Week 3: In week three of our course, we begin to develop some specific skills for writing in the workplace. We consider the three phases of planning, composing, and revising, and consider activities that are related to each. We look at time management, planning, organizing, some misconceptions about revising for style, proofreading strategies, and how to give and receive feedback effectively.
Week 4: During week four, we will continue to build skills in document design, moving from page and text design to consider and practice visual design.
We will discuss when to use visuals in business documents. We will also learn guidelines and techniques for visual design, and learn how to integrate visuals and data displays efficiently into business documents. As we will see, visuals have the power of showing what we want to communication.
Week 5: During week five, we will focus on a popular topic: employment correspondence. We will discuss the r?sum? and application letter (also widely known as the cover letter) as aspects of an overall career strategy, and will also consider the values of building portfolios. We will develop strategies for effective interviewing, networking, and other aspects of communications related to employment. We will examine the ethical aspects of employment correspondence and interviewing, and will practice research techniques related to the job search.
Week 6: Sharing Informative and Positive Messages, Delivering Negative Messages); and the sections on Progress Reports in Chapter 18 (Writing Proposals and Progress Reports) in Locker.
Week 7: Crafting Persuasive Messages, Planning and Researching Reports, Analyzing Information and Writing Reports.
