Concert Attendance Report
For this project you need to plan ahead. You will need to attend a Symphony Orchestra Concert or Opera in order to complete it. As long as it is a symphony orchestra concert or opera any event is OK. Solo recitals, musicals, chamber music concerts, jazz concerts, or other non-orchestra concerts will not be acceptable. If you attend an opera you must find a way to be able to see the orchestra at some point in the performance so that you can make your hand-drawn seating diagram (they are usually in the "pit" – yes, that’s what it’s called)."
Your Assignment
You are to write a 3-page term paper giving a review of the concert you attended. Your report should be in essay?form,?11-font, double-spaced. Please be sure to cover every piece on the program. Your review must include the following:
What kind of listener were you at the concert? Why?
What pieces were performed?
What was the style of each of the pieces performed?
What was the instrumentation of the orchestra?
Draw out the seating arrangement of the instruments in the orchestra.

You may mail your Concert Report materials to the campus address shown on the Important Information page for this website or come to the Music Office at the Madison Campus between 8:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. on week days to leave these materials in an envelope in my department mail box. The Madison Music Academy is located on Santa Monica Blvd. between 10th and 11th Streets and there is plenty of free parking.
No late reports will be accepted. Evaluation of your work will depend on how complete, coherent, and valid your comments and arguments are.

While archaeologists of the past sought the tombs of kings, modern archaeologists tend to focus on trash middens in the search for information. The trash of the common member of the culture is far more instructive than the tombs or houses of the economic elite.
For this assignment I want you to record everything your throw away for one week. If you live in the dorms gather data on what you personally throw away. If you are part of a household or live off campus record what is thrown away at your residence. It is not necessary to take out your trash and go through it, but if you eyeball it and discuss with other people in your residence what they have tossed away then you can get a good feel for what all has been discarded. Then tell me, in an essay of at least 300 words, what you think your refuse says about you and possible those that you live with.
The interpretation is the tricky part and I often advise students to imagine that the garbage belongs to someone else. What does the refuse tell you about the household’s economic status, religious beliefs or political system? Can you gauge how many individuals were part of the household or if the refuse was even from a single household? You may include your list of things that were thrown away; though it does not count toward the minimum length requirement. This assignment is worth 25 points so have fun and be creative with your interpretations and if you take it seriously you might just find out a thing or two about yourself through your garbage!

Maverick was born with a severe heart defect, and even after two surgeries was in heart failure. Doctors had discussed a heart transplant with Maverick’s parents, but at the meeting they said he didn’t qualify for a new heart because he had a rare genetic defect that put him at a high risk for tumors and infections. A heart transplant would be too risky, they explained.
As Chenkus did her research on Maverick’s genetic condition, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Not one of the studies she read mentioned anything about an increased risk for tumors or infections. She e-mailed one study’s author, and he confirmed she was right.
but the mother disagreed, she thought Maverick should get the transplant, but it didn’t matter because Maverick didn’t need the transplant.
If they went through with the transplant like the mother wanted Maverick would probably be dead.
There are few hard and fast rules to guide doctors as they select who will get a transplant, effectively selecting who will live and who will die.
And there’s no question some will die. Last year in the United States, 321 people, including 19 infants, lost their lives while waiting for a new heart. Right now, some 3,500 people await a heart transplant, and the situation is only getting more desperate as the waiting list grows but the number of donors remains about the same.
In the face of such scarcity, doctors try to select the patients most likely to get the longest life, and the highest quality of life, from a new heart.
"We have to be stewards of a very valuable resource. We want hearts to go to people who we think will benefit the most from them," said Dr. David Taylor, immediate past president of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation.
These decisions are, to some extent, subjective, as doctors sometimes disagree with each other about who should get an organ. Over the years, medical ethicists and patient advocates have accused transplant physicians of discriminating against one group in particular: the disabled.
"We absolutely know this happens. It’s a huge problem," said David Magnus, director of the Center for Biomedical Ethics at Stanford University. "It’s real people sitting in a room making these tough decisions, and it’s not surprising their own prejudices and biases influence them."
If I was the doctor I would’ve declined the heart transplant too, because it was too risky for the 5 month old. I would want the the best for my patient. I would want my patient to be happy, and his parents too. If I’d done the heart transplant he would’ve been dead most likely in my opinion. In this case the doctors did what was best.
