Jihad
In the last couple of decades, frenzy has gripped most nations over the pervasive issue of terrorism. Its far reaching effects have caused most governments to go into wars in a bid to stop its spread. Amid all these, terrorism has been largely attributed to extremist and fundamentalist Islamists who have termed their acts as holy war or Jihad. This has raised several questions on the use and interpretation of the term. Is jihad synonymous to holy war? Does the Islam religion sanction the atrocities caused by extremist terror groups in the name of Jihad? What is the real meaning of the term? Such questions demand a thorough investigation if the term and by extension the whole issue of terrorism is to be understood. This essay explores the meaning of the term and its interpretation Muslims.
In its literal sense, jihad connotes a struggle or effort to achieve something good. It signifies the duty for any Muslim to summon all their will and efforts in order to achieve a just and fair cause. This implies that the word refers to a wide range of struggles that Muslims have to endure for the sake of the religion and most importantly for Allah. It is worth noting that a Muslim who is devoted to jihad is called a Mujahidin. This means that he has devoted his life to doing good, defending the teaching of Allah, his Prophet and religion, ensuring justice and righteousness prevail among all people.
Jihad is categorized into two major groups: the greater jihad and the lesser jihad. The greater jihad is the most important for all Muslims. Originally referred to as Jihadun-Nafs, it involves the personal intimate struggles with self in a bid to purify one’s soul and ways from the entrapments of all evil(Bonner 36). Success in this jihad is manifested by a person’s ability to put Allah’s interest above all his properties, ambitions and family as well as resist all the evil snares from friends or any other person. They must live within the confines of the five pillars, profess the faith to all nations and fulfill all the requirements of Allah and the guidance of Mohamed his Prophet.
The lesser Jihad is further divided into two: verbal and physical jihads. Verbal jihad reprimands all Muslims to control their use of words in unjust or violent manner. This is because unrestrained use of words is the major cause of violence which is against Islamic teachings. Physical Jihad, on the other hand, connotes the use of physical strength in defense of the oppressed, the religion and Allah’s cause. This means that whenever Allah’s people are oppressed, especially by non-Muslims, it is the responsibility of other Muslims to use all force at their disposal in order to restore their freedom. The Quran, however, warns that this should not be used as a justification for aggression and destruction of property. It should be the last resort after the verbal jihad has failed to yield fruits.
Physical jihad has however, been the common interpretation by people from different quotas. This has thus made most to believe that jihad is synonymous to holy war against non-believers. This interpretation is, however, not entirely true. First, physical jihad is categorized as a lesser jihad and secondly, it should be used when all efforts have failed. This means that Islam in general do not sanction the use of violence, terror and murder as a strategy for winning converts as depicted by extremists.
