Cultural Critique
A cultural critique looks closely at a particular element of a society? a car, a company’s website, a particular fashion item? and analyzes what that element tells us about the culture generally. To write a cultural critique, a writer must be able to step back from the culture in which he or she is immersed and try to see (as objectively as possible) how that culture works.
To write a successful cultural critique, you need to go beyond the obvious to tell the reader something new, unexpected, or controversial. (For example, you won’t be breaking any new ground looking at an engagement ring to show how it signifies a person’s intention to get married.)
This week’s reading selections employ various writing strategies to offer insights into several cultural customs and beliefs. For this week’s major essay assignment, use at least three of the 10 writing strategies we’ve outlined in class to craft a cultural critique essay of your own that explains a specific custom or practice or attitude that is woven into the American way of life. Write about it in an insightful, reflective style that allows you to arrive at a new dimension of thought regarding the chosen behavior or belief.
Since this essay is about culture and not about you, the writer as an individual observer of culture, your final draft must be written in 3rd person point of view instead of 1st person or 2nd person point of view. Substantial points will be deducted if 3rd person point of view is not used exclusively throughout your submitted document.
– 3rd person point of view uses words like ‘he,’ ‘she,’ ‘it,’ ‘they,’ and ‘one.’
– 2nd person point of view uses the word ?you.?
– 1st person point of view uses words like ?I’ we,’ ‘our,’ and ‘us.’
The final draft of your essay must be more than 4 typed pages in length, double-spaced. Use Times New Roman style and 11 or 12 point font. This essay is worth 20% of the final grade for ENG1005. Prior to turning in your work for grading purposes, make sure you have completed the following steps:
1. Brainstorm your ideas on the topic on which you’ve selected to write.
2. Write a thesis statement that represents your ideas on the topic.
3. Create an outline for your essay.
4. Determine which writing strategies will best present your thoughts and insights on the
topic.
5. Write the essay, making sure your introduction offers a thesis statement for your cultural
critique and your conclusion clearly circles back to your introduction and to your essay’s thesis statement.
6. Revise the entire document as many times as necessary to ensure your thoughts are clearly conveyed, your paragraphs are logically developed, and your grammar is correct.
7. Edit for spelling and prepare your final draft.

– Meets criteria detailed above and in class
– Refers to one of the this week’s selected textbook readings, using proper MLA
formatting (as described in class and in your course textbook)
– Demonstrates thoughtful, personal reflection on the topic
– Contains well-supported paragraphs

– Shows mastery of grammar and punctuation
– Employs 3rd person point of view throughout its presentation
