This week, you will submit the rough draft of your Final Project Paper for feedback from your Instructor.

To prepare for this Final Project Milestone:

The assignment:

Compose a 5- to 10-page paper and 10- to 15-slide PowerPoint presentation that include the following:

•Important characteristics about the historical background of your chosen country
•The country’s major natural resources, and how the geography and geology of the country influenced the availability of resources to the people living in the region
•The main mode of livelihood for people in the region, and, if it has changed, how it has changed over time
•How the current practices and patterns of living, working, and consuming resources impact both the local and global environments
•The most pressing environmental issues facing the country
•The country’s current perspective on these issues, including any laws that are in place to address the problems or any proposed solutions to the problems
•The environmental, social, or economic challenges that the country might face in the future
Your paper should be formatted as follows:

•This paper should be at least 5 pages, be written in paragraph form (not numbered or bulleted responses), and be long enough to include all the necessary information in a detailed and complete manner.
•Use 10 or 12 point Times New Roman, Times, Arial, or another standard font.
•Double-space the text, selecting standard-sized paper (8.5 x 11 inches) with 1-inch margins on all sides.

•Number the pages.
Your PowerPoint presentation should be formatted as follows:

Topic: Into Thin Air is a book about mountain climbing, but its popularity is based on the fact that it’s more than just an interesting tragic story. Jon Krakauer’s book is thought provoking on a variety of levels. He describes climbing Everest as an “intrinsically irrational act,” which seems true to most readers, but is that a bad thing? Are dangerous and difficult feats worthwhile? What are our obligations to our fellowman? Your job for this research paper is to consider some of the “bigger” questions that arise in this book, and develop one of your questions into a thesis. Your research paper does not need to be based on Into Thin Air, or even mountain climbing, but it does need to include Into Thin Air as one of its sources.

Thesis: You will have broad latitude for your research topic, but it should be connected to Into Thin Air in some way. For example, you may decide to focus on altitude sickness, and its contribution to deaths and injuries on Everest. A previous student wrote a successful paper, in which she argued that extreme athletes, like mountain climbers suffer from mental illness. Another possible area of research might be to focus the treatment of sherpas. You may also decide to broad your focus into research on failures of leadership, or example. You must use Into Thin Air as a resource, along with at least four other scholarly websites, journals, or books that deal with your chosen topic. Remember that this isn’t simply a long report; you need to develop a debatable thesis, and persuade your reader. There are many articles in Outside Magazine, which is archived online, which deal with topics, relating to Into Thin Air.

Procedure: If you are not familiar with MLA formatting requirements for research paper, I highly suggest you read through the materials available on the OWL, Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab. Each source should be cited at least twice within your paper.. The books and articles you find in your research must be sober and professional. For example, USA Today is not an acceptable source. Make use of the databases, which can be accessed from the Taft College Library webpage. If you are not sure whether a source is acceptable, check with me. Make a detailed outline. Make sure your outline includes a debatable thesis; that thesis and its support (your arguments and research) are the heart of your essay. It’s important that your essay is an argument, not just a general analysis of your topic.

Turn in a thesis proposal, outline, annotated bibliography, and works cited list for your essay by the assigned due dates. You will also be required to turn in copies of your sources (or at least the pages you’ve sited from your sources).
