Language learning and/or maintenance: Attitudes towards the maintenance of immigrants languages and cultures Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Prepare an essay of 750-1000 words (approximately 3-4 pages) on a topic related to language learning and/or maintenance. Choose one of the two topics or, if you wish, include both in your essay.
•&νβσπ; Attitudes towards the maintenance of immigrants languages and cultures ( interview recent immigrants)
•&νβσπ; Attitudes towards learning a language and a new identity ( interview recent immigrants)
You can work with another student or in a small group to conduct research outside of class for this essay. You can interview your family members, members of the community or your peers from the university or high school. As you know, individuals who belong to different age groups have different attitudes towards maintenance of the heritage language and culture and also towards acquiring the language of the host country. This means that your data will be varied if your interviewees are from different age groups and represent both genders. Be very sensitive when asking culture-related questions.
In your introduction, please summarize what you have learned in the course about second language learning and/or heritage language and culture maintenance. In your conclusion, summarize the data you obtained through the interviews and comment on how the ideas in the introduction were or were not confirmed by your data.
Some sample topic sentences are:
Older immigrants find it very difficult to learn English after they arrive in Canada.
Children under the age of 12 are usually happy to learn English and communicate in their new language.
Immigrant women who do not work outside the house have less motivation to learn English than their spouses.
Young immigrants who have arrived between the ages of 14 and 17 find learning English absolutely necessary fro their future life in Canada.

Your essay should have 3-6 body paragraphs; you should edit and revise your draft several times, paying attention to development of the thesis and topic sentences, coherence of the paragraphs, tense and voice consistency, subject/verb agreement, parallelism, modification etc.
Strategies to help you write better:
Remember that a well-written thesis statement in an argumentative essay:

Is usually one sentence somewhere in your introductory paragraph (often at the end) presenting your complete argument to the reader
Expresses an opinion and three major points supporting this opinion
Is very specific (and not vague or too general)
Gives the reader a sense of how the paper will be organized

When you reread your writing, you can use these questions to help focus your editing:
Are my main points clearly outlined in my topic sentences?
Are my ideas presented logically with my main points first?
Are my ideas and paragraphs connected together – using connecting words/phrases (For example: As a result, In addition, etc.)
Does every paragraph focus on one main point or topic in my argument?
Are my main points supported by concise and rich examples/details?
Is my writing clear, grammatically correct and understandable?
Do I use parallelism to reinforce points?
Does my concluding paragraph leave the reader thinking about the importance of my discussion?

interview Questions
Here are some interview questions used by students in previous years.
Attitudes towards learning a language and a new identity

1. What is your background?
2. How long have you been in Canada?
3. Have you studied English before you came to Canada?
4. Do you think learning a new language is hard?
5. Why do you want to learn a new language? (are you willing or forced to learn?)
6. How much money or time would you want to spend on the language learning?
7. Do you want to be a Canadian and give up your culture?
8. Do you want to have a job in Canada?
9. When you learn a new language, will you feel a loss in your own language?

Metamorphosis is about a process of change or transformation: We often think of the first moments of the story as Gregor’s realization that a metamorphosis has occurred Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

We often think of the first moments of the story as Gregor’s realization that a metamorphosis has occurred; however, there are lots of changes that take place after the beginning. Choose one metamorphosis (in Gregor’s body—in Gregor’s feelings—in Grete’s behavior–in family dynamics—etc.) and explain how it occurs in the story, using quotes as needed to illustrate. Then, end by commenting on the significance of this particular metamorphosis to the story as a whole.

How does “illness as metaphor” work in this story? How does Gregor’s transformation into an insect becomes itself a metaphor for other roles, states of being, experiences, and relationships in which he is treated like an insect?

Elaborate on how Kafka develops Gregor’s change into an insect into a process that is similar to the onset of some illnesses or disabilities (of body or mind), developing your idea with facts and quotes from the story.

This story is often classified as written in the genre of “the fantastic” because its starting point is a highly unrealistic event (man wakes up, is turned into a bug).On the other hand, many aspects of the story are very realistic. Discuss where the story is fantastic and where it is realistic, using examples from the text and closing with a comment on the effect of this mix of the fantastic and the realistic.

Two main strategies of the literature of the fantastic are making the familiar strange and making the strange familiar. Which of these (might be both?) does Kafka use and where? Obviously, support with examples.

Plan of Investigation: Should Che Guevara be remembered as a “ruthless executioner” or “heroic figure”? Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Ernesto “Che” Guevara was a Marxist revolutionary. He was a major figure in the Cuban revolution and a guerilla fighter in Bolivia, where he was executed. In his death he is revered by many and reviled by some. People believe that Guevara was “an inspiration for every human being” while others see him as “a man full of hatred.” Although he was a sympathetic practitioner of medicine, he didn’t hesitate to kill his enemies. He wanted a utopian policy, but advocated violence in doing so. He fought for the freedom of many and yet some still remember his executions of Cuban prisoners without trial. There is no doubt by many that Guevara stood for equality for all, but did he have limits in achieving this? Should Che Guevara be revered or reviled now, over forty-five years after his death?
My plan is to analyze primary and secondary sources that both support and oppose Guevara. After doing this I will reduce my list of sources to the most reliable and relevant. With an unbiased eye I will look at everyones grievances and admirations of him. I will look at his life from the eyes of a person that supports him and what he stood for and from those of someone that believe he was impractical. After scrutinizing his life from every probable angle I will attempt to come to a conclusion as to where Guevara stood in his life, what his limits were and whether – from an ethical standard – we should revere or revile him today.

Part B is the Summary of Evidence. It needs to be presented in a continuous prose/format and organized with subtitles. It must provide succinct evidence that shows thorough research and avoids lengthy explanations. Any illustrations, documents or other relevant evidence should be included in the appendix and will not be part of the word count. Factual material must be drawn from sources that are scholarly for the investigation. Sources must be sufficient to provide an in-depth understanding of the topic and clearly related to the question under investigation (evidence must support the thesis). It needs to be correctly and consistently cited/referenced (footnotes for history). Organized chronologically or thematically. This part kind of needs to look like a Wikipedia page, almost EVERYTHING must be cited/referenced.
Part C is the Evaluation of Sources. The TWO sources that are going to be referenced most often needs to be evaluated here. Internet, encyclopedic and unknown sources should be avoided. The purpose of this section is to assess the usefulness of the sources to the investigation, not just the content or nature of the source. There should be explicit reference to the ORIGIN, PURPOSE, VALUES and LIMITATIONS of the sources. In regard to value and limitation, the focus should be on evaluating the validity or reliability of the source. If a source is deemed to be of great value it should be stated why/how is it of such value.
Part D is the analysis. Here the evidence is applied to the research question. What does the evidence tell about the topic. You need to break down complex issues for analysis in order to bring out the essential elements of the historical topic. Present an understanding of the historical topic/issue in its broader historical context. You should discuss different historical interpretations of your topic. Also discuss any historiographical problems with the topic such as propaganda and/or censorship in providing a balanced perspective. An awareness of the significant sources accessed/used, especially the sources evaluated in part C. Information should be correctly and consistently referenced/cited (footnoted for history).
Part E is the Conclusion. Requires an answer to the research question, based on the evidence presented. The conclusion must be clearly stated, consistent with the evidence presented and relevant to the question under evaluation.
Part F is the List of Sources. There should be accurate and consistent referencing throughout the investigation. All sources, whether written or otherwise (such as interviews) must be listed correctly.
