Persuasion and business marketing Literature Review
Objective: To provide students with the opportunity to analyze and research current trends in the area of persuasion she or he finds the most interesting. Students will build a stronger understanding of persuasion in a variety of phenomena.
The Assignment: Your assignment is to write a literature review of persuasion and business marketing Each student will choose a topic, break the topic down into three related areas and offer a thorough review of current research in the area. For example, a student may have the title: “Persuasion and Physical Attractiveness: How Attractiveness is Beneficial at School, Work, and Socially,” or “Persuasion and Being Tall: What We Know About Height in Politics, Employment Opportunities, and Dating,” or “Persuasion and Sales: Nonverbal Communication, Verbal Communication, and Listening.”
The Paper: If you read quantitative scholarly journal articles they are all generally broken down into the same several sections. The first or second section is usually a literature review in the field in which the research is being conducted. Before a scholar spends any time doing original research, she or he must first understand what has already been done. You will be doing something similar to what every quantitative researcher has to do, find the current literature and write about it. The good news is that you do not have to be nearly as specific. While your common journal article is a specific as “Tie Signs in Teenage Romantic Relationships: Understanding Youth’s Need for Proprietarinism Through Haptics,” your topic will be as broad as “Persuasion and Haptics: Touching with Love, Aggression, and Power.”
Introduction: The introduction of your paper should be less than one page, should inspire interest in your topic, contain a clear thesis, and offer a preview of what is to come in the paper.
The Body: The body of your paper will have three separate, yet connected, sections. Each will offer an in depth literature review on the topic you have chosen. A literature review is a basic discussion of the current or important scholarly work in a particular area. Here are a few tips:
• Your body should have at least 10 scholarly sources spread throughout the paper.
• For the purpose of this paper, scholarly research comes from scholarly journals and edited scholarly books. This does not include textbooks. Edited Scholarly Books, are generally put together by an expert in the field and include specific chapters from different authors throughout.
• If you do not know what counts as a scholarly source, ask your professor.
• Your paper should NOT be a summary of article after article.
• Your sources should be used to show a collection of ideas, to support your conclusions, and to offer a well rounded view of particular areas of research.
• When reading your paper, you should see a variety of source citations throughout each page and paragraph.
• You paper does not need to include information about the research methods (participants, surveys, interviews, etc.)
• Use headings, keep it organized.
• Keep your paper connected, do not make it too broad (if you’re unsure, please ask)
o An example of the above would be “Persuasion and TV Commercials: Sex, Humor, and how to get a job as a commercial actor.”
• If at any time you need help, email or make an appointment to meet with your professor.
Discussion Section: The final section of your paper will be entitled the “Discussion.” This section should include your thoughts and ideas on the research, the limitations of the current research, and perhaps most importantly, where you would like the research to go in the future.
Logistics: The paper will be 5-7 pages, with proper headings throughout, Times New Roman, 12 point font, and in proper APA format. No Abstract. The paper is turned in as described on the evaluation sheet.
