Immanuel Kant theorized that humans are subjects and not objects. In other words Kant believes that we treat persons as ends within themselves and not means to our own ends. Describe a time where you were treated as a means to someone else’s purpose or end and how you felt that it violated your personal code of ethics.

Domestic Issue: Immigration –Should congressional Republicans adopt a comprehensive immigration bill and then face a likely backlash from many of their own voters, or should they oppose efforts that would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented workers that may contribute to larger GOP losses Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

X. Short Research Paper (RP):
A. Write an 8-10 page double-spaced typed paper addressing ONE of the following questions:
1. Domestic Issue: Immigration –Should congressional Republicans adopt a comprehensive immigration bill and then face a likely backlash from many of their own voters, or should they oppose efforts that would provide a path to citizenship for undocumented workers that may contribute to larger GOP losses in the future as over 11 million immigrants become citizens?

2. Constitutional issue: Should the Supreme Court overturn State laws banning same sex marriage because contrary to the “Full Faith and Credit Clause” of Article IV such laws would not recognize gay marriages of same sex couples that married in states where gay marriage was legal, or should the Court allow each state to decide whether or not to recognize gay marriages based on the preferences of the majority of state voters?

3. Foreign Policy: Should the US provide more support to the Syrian rebels who are trying to overthrow the dictatorship of Bashar al-Assad, to include sophisticated weapons and possibly a no fly zone, or should it avoid further military involvement in Syria? (why and why not?)

B. Guidance: Paper will be based entirely on the student’s OWN research and analysis. Student should analyze and accurately describe how exactly the issues raised by the question affects or are likely to impact the Public interest and US national security (for #3). The paper should examine both sides of the issue* (for and against), and after (AND ONLY AFTER) objective written analysis- adopt a personal position which can be supported by that written analysis. Student may use the Text for initial reference, plus a minimum of four other outside secondary or *primary sources *(i.e. news articles in major newspapers/magazines, political journals, major news analysis on radio/TV broadcasts, such as C-SPAN, NPR, Network or Cable political talk show/News interviews with recognized experts, government officials or members of congress, & the Internet.) Note: such web sites as www.Wikipedia.com and other similar sites are only acceptable if they contain cited sources of recognized authorities and experts. Such sources can be useful at the start of your research for their endnotes which may identify other more authoritative sources.

C. Footnotes in MLA style: The paper should be submitted in MLA style and will cite all sources by footnotes. Your paper should also include a standard bibliography or a list of cited sources used for support of all statements made throughout paper that are not your own work or ideas. Instructions on when to use footnotes and how, along with examples for using footnotes are available at: http://www.markville.ss.yrdsb.edu.on.ca/history/history/footnotes.html (and are also shown below)
HOW DO I FOOTNOTE USING MY COMPUTER? (for Microsoft Word 2007):
Step 1: Click on References tab
Step 2: Click Insert footnote
Step 3: Type in publication information as follows: Author’s First Name, Author’s Last Name,
Title of Source. (Place of Publishing: Publisher, copyright date) page number.
Step 4: Scroll back to essay (Note: for older versions of Word click Insert tab & follow prompts)

D. Final draft of your Paper is due Class 15a, either in “hard copy” following class 15a’s Review & FX prep, or e-mailed as an attachment to SEALsrest@earthlink.net by midnight on the Sunday immediately following the POLS-229 Final Exam..
E. Comment on thesis statements* and how you address the RP question chosen:
Many of you will feel strongly about which side of the contentious issues presented in the syllabus you support or oppose. That’s fine, but the guidance presented in the syllabus directs that you “…analyze and accurately describe how exactly the issues raised by the question (that you select) affects the Public interest. The paper should examine both sides of the issue (for and against), and –after (AND ONLY AFTER) (your) objective written analysis of both sides- adopt a personal position which can then be supported by that written analysis.” In other words you are required to present both sides of the argument objectively, then analyze those arguments (pro & con), and then take a position and explain why we the reader should agree with your analysis and conclusions.

F. Objective and balanced presentation: Some students in the past have mistakenly taken a strong position advocating one side of the issue over the other right off. If the exercise merely required you to advocate one side of the argument vs. the other, that approach would be correct. But this project is more complicated than merely advocating one particular position of a contentious issue. The object of this exercise is to research, analyze, and present both sides (pro & con) of the issues first- in an objective and unbiased presentation. Once that’s accomplished, and based on your subsequent reasoned analysis of those arguments, you may then present whatever you’ve concluded to be the best argument (for or against) the position that you may have already strongly favored intuitively from the very start. Just explain in a rationale and objective presentation why we the readers should also embrace your conclusion (position), especially if we were neutral or inclined to favor the opposite view. You may then state the position that you may have already favored all along at the start in your paper’s concluding section. This statement should then be followed by convincing rationale for it based on your previous objective analysis.

Games And the Media: Games are becoming part of the “mainstream” media – but not always in a positive way Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Please describe how games and gamers are depicted in the media, when they become a topic, and how this coverage compares to coverage of other types of entertainment media (movies, music). Make an argument for why this is happening and cite evidence (from academic sources) to support your arguments.
Please note that the questions are suggestive prompts that you could address in your essay. It does not mean that you need to answer all of the questions in your essay. The most important aspect of the essay is to have a thesis and use evidence and arguments for support.

First, re-read Miller’s Acts I & II of Death of a Salesman. Use the module notes and assigned readings to further guide your analysis of the play’s theme Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

First, re-read Miller’s Acts I & II of Death of a Salesman. Use the module notes and assigned readings to further guide your analysis of the play’s theme. Clearly, the play grapples with the theme of self-awareness and family values (think “Barn Burning”) and what it means to pursue the “American Dream” among other possible themes. You also should review the two (2) New York Times articles related to Miller’s play and its themes, so ensure you review all of the following for this assignment:
Death of a Salesman.

Write an essay of no fewer than 500 words maximum analyzing what you see as the primary theme of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman, and assert why you think “attention must be paid.”
You should provide at least two (2) quotes from Act I and two (2) quotes from Act II, for no less than four (4) quotes total from the play to support your argument/s. Of course, there are many essays on this classic play, so if you use another author’s commentary on the drama, such as the New York Times articles you are asked to read in this module, make sure to cite that author’s article and to include the cited website using APA formatting.

Select any topic you would like to work on from the content of the class: The easiest way is to choose a specific topic from your text (for example, ‘managerial skills’ as opposed to simply ‘management’) Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Topic: Select any topic you would like to work on from the content of the class. The easiest way is to choose a specific topic from your text (for example, ‘managerial skills’ as opposed to simply ‘management’). Your topic will determine your due date. For example, if your chosen topic is related to Chapter 2 (Part I), your due date will be Monday October 14th, and so on.
Content of the class: chapter 14,15, 16, 17.
Current Event: You will then search for at least one news article that relates to your chosen topic. The news article used in your paper must be current (no more than ONE year old from your due date) and from a reputable source. Undated documents, articles from personal web pages, Wikipedia, or those with anonymous authors are unacceptable. You may find a list of possible sources on Canvas. The quality of the article is a major factor in your paper’s grade. Selecting an appropriate article and having an understanding of the topic and its relevance will make completing this project easier. A good news article should provide sufficient details for your analysis. Be sure to spend time searching for a good article. Alternately, you may find the news article BEFORE choosing your topic. You must reference all sources using appropriate format. There will be FIVE points deduction for outdated article. If you use more than one article, the main source must be current (i.e. within one year from the due date).
Paper Format: A format required for your paper is provided in this syllabus. The body of your paper will comprise of two parts: the Information (1-2 pages), and the Analysis (2-3 pages). The Information section (1-2 pages) includes the text chapter, due date, bibliographic information of the news article and all other sources used in APA format (see Canvas for guidelines), a summary of the article in bulleted format, and a summary of the related management topic. The Analysis section (1-3 pages) will include your analysis of how the course contents apply to the news article. The Analysis section makes up for 50% of your paper grade.

The final paper will be from 2-5 pages, double space, with one inch margin on all sides, using 10 point fonts (approximately
1000 to 2500 words). Your paper must be free from spelling and grammatical errors. Failure to follow these instructions will result in point deductions. If you cannot provide a live link to your article on the internet, bring a paper copy to class on your due date.

The Analysis: The best paper will demonstrate your understanding of the chosen topic and your ability to apply the knowledge in real world situations. The chosen news article may be used as an example of the management concept, or analyzed in details to show how a management theory is applicable to the situation in the article. If appropriate, you may use additional management concepts to support your main analysis.

TurnItIn: Your paper will be scanned on TurnItIn for possible plagiarism. Papers that are marked low on originality will
be returned for revision or marked as plagiarized (see Academic Honesty section in your syllabus).
