You have actively read, studied, and analyzed Harvard psychology professor Steven Pinkers The Moral Instinct, published by the New York Times in 2008. In class we discussed the effectiveness of Pinkers writing strategies, such as his casual, yet intellectual(AKA academic) tone; depth and breadth of research; and numerous, illustrative and thought-provoking examples. We agreed that Pinker works hard to explain and illustrate his ideas as well as those of others. Pinkers essay is both exploration and argumenta provocative
research paper. Through exploring the evolution and neurobiological roots of human morality, he comes to the sound conclusion: Far
from debunking morality, then, the science of the moral sense can advance it, by allowing us to see through the illusions that evolution and culture have saddled us with and to focus on goals we can share and defend (para.16). Pinker makes the case that unproductive culture wars are the consequence of our misunderstanding of morality, and that instead of waging moral wars, we should be working to find common ground to improve society.
One section of Steven Pinkers The Moral Instinct focuses on what he calls the moralization switch. He describes that moralization
is a psychological state that can be turned on and off like a switch and when it is on, a distinctive mind-set commandeers our
thinking (para. 2), and later that Much of our recent social history, including the culture wars between liberals and conservatives, consists of the moralization or amoralization of particular kinds of behavior (para.3). Pinker distinguishes between amoralizing and moralizing through specific examples. Divorce, illegitimacy, being a working mother, marijuana use, and homosexuality are offered as examples of amoralization; while smoking, disposable diapers, poultry farms, Barbie dolls, human cause of climate change, and human cloning are
given as examples of moralization.
For this essay, choose a human behavior that has been moralized or amoralized, and research that behavior, reporting on the history (some histories will be more recent than others) of social and legal prohibitions against it (note that the very categorization of some of these things as behaviors or choices is controversial). In your research, be sure to acknowledge the moral agendas (possible reasons for moralizing/amoralizing) within the sources you find. Once you present your findings, discuss the current and future consequences/benefits of the moralization or amoralization of this behavior for our culture. The essay should be a minimum of 6 pages, not including the Works Cited Page, and include 5 outside sources. The five sources must be peer-reviewed. The paper should be in MLA format.
OFF LIMITS: abortion, marijuana, and climate change
While I am not asking you to sound like Pinker, as the writer, you should accomplish the following:
a. interest (provoke, engage, challenge) the reader with an introduction that utilizes an anecdote, analogy, hypothetical situation;,
or another hook.
b. engage and maintain your readers interest with an academic, tone
c. define your points and illustrate your explanations with specific examples;
d. contextualize appropriate research from various media sourcesperiodicals, books, television, film, music, games, etc. (a minimum of
five sources);
e. discuss the current and future consequences of the moralization or amoralization of the behavior.
