Your Assignment: We have spent much of the semester considering a variety of mass media forms. Let?s spend some time thinking about what we do with these media. For three consecutive days beginning no later than Monday, April 9, keep a log of your media use each day. Based on your logs, write a 2 to 2-and-a-half page double-spaced, typewritten analysis document?1 inch margins and 12-type font are mandatory) in which you analyze your media use. [Do not exceed 2 ? pages for this analysis document!]
The goal of this exercise is for you to better understand your media consumption habits: what type of content you consume, how much media you consume and across what platforms. You will be asked to log your media consumption for three days based on the following:
1. The type of media content you consumed, the mode of distribution and how much time was spent specifically on social media (see the sample log).
2. Whether the mode of distribution was ?legacy? or ?new? media.
a. Examples of ?legacy? or ?traditional media? are: any local, network or cable programs you watch in ?real time? on a TV set (i.e., you?re seeing a show at the scheduled time it was meant to be seen by the company airing it); any radio listening via a receiver in your car or old style radio set in your home (exclude Internet or satellite radio); hard copies of newspapers, books or magazines; music on vinyl albums, tape cassettes, 8-track; movies viewed in a theater (including 3-D movies) or at home on TV. (Does anyone still use VHS? If so, that would be included in this Legacy media category).
b. Examples of ?new media? are: any TV shows or movies you view on a TV set via DVR, TiVo or time-shift via DVD; any video or audio content you consume over the Internet or on a hand-held device like your cell phone, iPod or iPad; Internet streaming radio, HD or satellite radio, radio you listen to on a handheld device like your phone; music on CD (although, technically this is old compared to the iPod), MP3 or iPod players or some other hand-held device or downloaded onto your computer. Also categorize the following as new media: digital games played on your computer or played through your TV set like DDR, Guitar Hero, World Tour, Play Station, Wii, etc.
3. The time of day rounded off to the nearest five-minute increment (e.g., if you listen to your iPod from 8:30 a.m. ? 8: 43 a.m., just round that up to 15 minutes).
4. Amount of time spent on particular content on a daily basis rounded off to the nearest five-minute increment.
Media use you should log (As described above, submit to Ram-CT a typed log table. Blank logs are located in the ?Papers? folder on Ram-CT):
Music, radio, TV, movies, magazines, newspapers, books (including textbooks or books for class), Internet use (including news sites, online video games, social networking sites like Facebook/MySpace/Twitter, e-mail, instant messaging, chat sites, video downloads from sites like Hulu or YouTube), and digital/video games like DDR, Guitar Hero, Wii, etc. Log cell phone use for listening to or downloading music, viewing or downloading video, reading news, Facebook or any other type of new media consumption described in this paper. For any type of media consumption, only log use that was in your control. For example, if you work at a restaurant, you would not log music you listened to that was played over the restaurant?s sound system. The same thing would apply for any other type of media you are exposed to at work, in the classroom, at a store (e.g., Muzak), or other similar environment. Log music you listen to in your dorm room ? even if your roommate is playing it ? if it?s something you also would have chosen to play.
What Not to Log:
Do not log cell phone use for the purpose of texting or phone conversations ? this type of use can be too fractured and complicated for time-tracking.
Log Procedures: Use the log provided under the ?Papers? link on Ram-CT to record your media use. Download as many blank log tables as you need for three days to log all media use as described above. You might consider printing out some logs, fill them in with pen or pencil, then when you?re ready to write up the assignment, download some fresh blank logs and type in the cells. [You can also do all this electronically.] When it comes to multi-tasking, count all media consumed. For example, if you spent 30 minutes listening to music on your computer while surfing the Internet, count 30 minutes for each on your log. At the end of your three-day logging period, analyze your use of media and look for trends in your consumption habits. [There is also an example of a filled-in log sheet in the ?Papers? folder on Ram-CT, take a look!]
Writing the Paper: Organize your analysis paper in three parts. Title the paper My Media Use. Clearly label each section as follows:
New vs. Legacy Media. Begin your paper with a strong statement that captures the reader?s attention and describes the trend you discovered in the technology and content preferences you have as a media consumer. Describe the amount of time overall you spent using legacy vs. new media daily ? summarize here to make a point and do not simply list amounts of time consuming each. What was your average time spent each day with legacy media vs. new media? Did you use more legacy media for certain types of content and new media for other types of content or did you distribute your consumption somewhat equally among old and new media? Can you account for differences in your old vs. new media use based on the type of content you were consuming? For example, you may have discovered that for music, you tended to use more new media because it allowed you to listen to music while multi-tasking (e.g., listening to your iPod while exercising or walking to class). You also may have found that for your favorite TV programs, you preferred traditional television broadcasts instead of watching these programs on the Internet or downloaded to your computer or iPod. Were you surprised at how much legacy vs. new media you consume? If you had to create a profile of yourself as a media consumer based on your media technology preferences (i.e., old vs. new), how would you define yourself? You likely will not have the space to address all the questions listed here ? address the most relevant to your findings. (Approx. ? – ? page)
Types of Content. Assess and describe your media consumption behavior based on the content you consumed. What trends can you identify? For example, did you primarily choose media content for its entertainment value, to access news and information or to interact with others in a social networking environment? Are there themes in the type of media content you consume ? especially when it comes to social networking? For example, when it comes to TV consumption, do you tend to consume more educational/documentary-style programs or reality TV shows? Do you consume certain types of media content more than others? How much do you interact socially via Facebook, Twitter or some other social media? What do your content choices say about you as a media consumer? (Approx. 1 page)
Reaction. What was your overall impression after tracking and analyzing your media use? Were the results different from what you expected? How do you think your media consumption affects your life? How is your media use beneficial to you? How might it be detrimental to you (e.g., do you think you are consuming too much media)? After assessing your media consumption habits, are you happy with the amount and type of media you use or do you plan to change how you consume media in the future? Don?t just give general comments like ?My media use is beneficial because it makes me smarter? without elaborating on what you mean by linking it back to specific media content or your habits of consumption you found based on your log. You likely will not have the space to address all the questions listed here ? address the most relevant to your findings. (Approx. ? – ? page)
Finally, after your paper is done, copy all of your log sheets (the final versions where all cells are filled with typed information), and paste them in order after your analysis paper. You should now be ready to submit to Ram-CT. Just as with past assignments, go to the ?Assignments? section and submit your completed document (with properly labeled file name, as described above).
