CRITICAL ANALYSES, LEARNING REFLECTION AND APPLICATION TO PRACTICE
(CALRAP) PAPERS
You are required to submit ONE 2-page ?CALRAP? papers on the assigned readings. These papers should include (i) your critical analysis (NOT criticism!) of the arguments, ideas, and suggestions contained within the articles that are relevant to the TOPIC of the session to which the readings are assigned; (ii) your personal reflection upon the main lessons and insights that you have learned from the assigned readings, and (iii) a discussion of the business and management implications of applying these ideas and insights to business practice within a firm/industry/professional area of interest to you, and/or the assigned case study. Note that the theme of any particular CALRAP should be focused on TOPIC of the course session to which the set of readings are assigned.
CALRAP papers should be 2 single spaced pages (or equivalent), 10 or 12 point font, 1? margins all round. CALRAP papers must be written individually, though you are encouraged to discuss the assigned readings in a study group.
The CALRAP papers are intended to develop your skills in critical analysis and learning reflection, and to focus your attention on considering the implications of these lessons for business and management practice that are relevant to the session topic. Your CALRAP papers should integrate and analyze the lessons, arguments, similarities, contradictions, conclusions, and implications contained within and most importantly across the assigned readings for that session‘s topic. You should then apply these lessons to your own work/professional context and experience and/or to the assigned case study. You should not focus exclusively on the issues contained within one reading, or provide a reading-by-reading synopsis. As we progress through the course, opportunities will also emerge to compare and contrast insights from readings assigned in earlier sessions with those assigned for the current session.
Some students have assumed that ?critical analysis? implies negative criticism of the assigned readings. This is NOT the case. Your CALRAP papers should be an objective, informed, and reflective analysis of the insights and ideas contained within the assigned reading, a personal reflection on the lessons suggested by the assigned readings, and a discussion of the potential application of these lessons for business and management practice. You may agree or disagree with the lessons contained in the readings, but you must support your opinion with informed argument. The purpose of these CALRAP papers is that the process of thoughtful reflection, writing, and application will contribute significantly to your learning and understanding of the course content.
The following list of questions is offered to help you to develop your thoughts for the CALRAP papers. As you read each article and book chapter, identify (highlight/underline) sections of the articles that address the points below or more 13
generally that strike you as being interesting. Makes notes in the margins of the readings about your reactions, why you think particular points are interesting/controversial/incorrect, note questions and thoughts about possible practical implications for business and management.
Then, having read through all the readings, consider the following questions across all the assigned readings (i.e. not on a reading by reading basis):
1. What are the main ideas and themes that are suggested within and across the assigned readings?
2. Critical Analysis: Are the authors‘ arguments and analyses convincing to you? Based upon previous readings and/or your own experiences, what are the major points that you agree with? What are the major points that you disagree with, or consider to be inappropriate for practice? Are there major issues or considerations that the authors have ignored? Do the authors anticipate and answer important counter-arguments? What evidence can you offer in support of your opinions? (e.g. personal experience, other articles you have read for this or other courses, application to the case studies)
3. Learning Reflection: What are the main lessons that these readings suggest to you? What new knowledge and insights about the session topic were revealed to you (either directly or indirectly) that you intend applying in the future? Are the lessons and implications that the authors suggest reasonable? Are they useful? Are the lessons consistent with readings from earlier sessions, and/or with your personal experience?
4. Application to Practice: In what contexts will you attempt to apply the lessons you have learned from the assigned readings? How will you apply the lessons? What caveats will you need to consider as you attempt to apply these lessons? What are the implications of these lessons for business and management practice in the future?

Understanding of the readings [20%]
Your CALRAP paper demonstrates that you understand the main assumptions, arguments (claims & lines of reasoning), and lessons contained within each of the readings. You comprehend what the authors were trying to convey.
Critical Analysis: substantive questioning and argumentation [20%]
You are able to question the assumptions, arguments and/or implications of the readings. You find problems, flaws or omissions in the authors‘ fundamental assumptions, arguments or implications. You are able to build a case for developing different assumptions, arguments or implications.
Integration and reflection on the key insights and lessons across the articles [20%]
You attempt to compare, contrast and integrate across the assigned readings. You discuss what you have learned about the session topic as a consequence of reading and reflecting upon the assigned readings.
Application to Practice [20%]:
You are able to apply the key insights and lessons from the readings to real business contexts, either those drawn from personal experience, or those described in the assigned case study, and describe the key implications for business and management practice
