Employment Law Identify and discuss all of the relevant employment law issues raised in the above scenario; Bill seems unsympathetic to Chris’s condition custom essay

[pewslideshow slidename=anim2]

Chris has worked for his local council for over eight years. He is employed to perform a variety of tasks to do with waste enforcement and market inspection. Chris has a good attendance record and has always received positive reports at his annual appraisals. Four years ago Chris developed bi-polar disorder a mental condition that affects his mood and behaviour. Chris is managing to control the condition with strong drugs but has to be closely monitored by a mental health support team. Chris has informed his Human Resources Department at the council that he suffers from the condition.

Recently Chris learnt that he has a new Line Manager, Bill. Bill seems unsympathetic to Chris’s condition. Chris recently asked to be able to leave work at 4pm on a Friday to enable him to attend an appointment with his mental health team but Bill refused him permission to leave work early. Chris left work anyway as he knew the importance of attending regular meetings. Bill discovered that Chris left early and has put him on a disciplinary. The stress caused by the impending disciplinary has caused a deterioration in Chris’s mental health. He has started to behave strangely at work. On arriving at work early one morning Chris overheard a conversation between several of his co-workers and Bill whereby they referred to him (Chris) as looney-tunes. Chris was so upset to think that his co-workers and his Line Manager could talk about him in this fashion that he walked out of his employment.

Identify and discuss all of the relevant employment law issues raised in the above scenario. What advice would you give to Chris? Be sure to substantiate your answer by reference to decided cases.

Communications and Media Audience Study custom essay

[pewslideshow slidename=anim2]

This assignment asks you to analyze comments by fans, a specific type of audience. There is an immense variety of fan sites to choose from (ranging from officially sanctioned sites (like CBS?sSurvivor website, to MTV?sJersey Shore site), to unedited newsgroups to unapproved, unofficial sites (some of which support the official sites, and some of which steal from them). I recommend choosing a particular example of a tv show, film, music band, video game, etc. in order to highlight what the discourse of fans reveals, both about the text, and the context obviously. Your goal, here, is to study a specific audience ? so analyses of ?rock music? in general will be far less effective than a study of how fans of a particular group differ from other rock fans, for example.
You may find it easiest to start by considering what type of audience you?re interested in. Then, you will have to decide on a place to find evidence of the fan community. Finally, you will have to select examples of fan discourse/activities that provide evidence for you to answer the questions below. So, for instance, you might start out by thinking that you want to investigate the fan-audience of Survivor. You will then need to choose which site will give you the most information. Do you use the official CBS webpage or find a blog based around the show, or go to a website that hosts reality TV show discussions in general, or go to a targeted site such as http://www.survivorfire.com? Once that decision is made, you will need to find a manageable forum for posts by fans that demonstrate exactly what kind of audience they are, what they do, what meanings they make, and what they get out of the experience.
You may find that some sites reveal a preponderance of comments like ?McDreamy is so hot!? or ?it?s f***** excellent that you can get away with showing so much violence and swearing on a show like Dexter? or this show rocks/sucks etc. Self-aggrandizement and celebrity worship are not the most important things here. However, they reveal other very important emphases. What, for instance, are the reasons why some people seem to pay such close attention to the message in question?
Once your forum has been chosen, identify and highlight crucial comments that reveal the relationship between fans and their product of choice. Use these to help you answer the following questions:
1. Upon identifying your text, specify what type of fan support it engenders. (is it able to be contained and controlled? Are they lovers, haters, etc?)
1a) What type of audience is it? (Refer to all the applicable readings in weeks 9 & 10. Is it properly referred to as a consumer-audience, a fan-audience, a subculture-audience, an enthusiast audience, or petty producer-audience and, how do the other authors? definitions of fandom differ from Abercrombie &Longhurst?s?)
1b) What type of skills does your audience display? (please note ? this will also help you answer the earlier question since certain audiences exhibit different skills)

2. What ?sensibility? is present? Explain why.
3. What ideology is present here? (You must refer to both Ang&Grossberg)
4. How is your audience of choice productive? (i.e., do they create anything new here – new objects, new meanings, a sense of community?)
5. What are the fans celebrating? Why does the text matter to them?
6. Is there any evidence of ?poaching?? If so, what shape does it take? If not, what does this mean? (Some choices of audience activity may allow you to answer this question quite easily. Other choices may provide very little evidence of poaching. In either case, you will end up providing further substantiation for your answers to questions #1 and answering the even more important question: What power does the fan have?
7. Is there any evidence of a communal identity? If so, what? If not, why? What is there instead?
Please note ? like the classifications of audiences, these questions are somewhat ?fluid? ? you will note that they blend into one another insofar as questions of power and celebration and new creations are all tied to one another. What you say in one question will be confirmed in another. But do not repeat yourself.
his is, essentially, a tightly scripted essay in which your sections are already clearly laid out ? all you need to do is find the material that allows you to answer them to the best of your ability. Your choice of an audience for your case-study should allow you to demonstrate your knowledge of these core concepts from the readings. As such, you are expected to cite the readings wherever possible. Explicit understanding can only be demonstrated by explicit references. Page numbers and exact quotes are necessary wherever possible (but, since you?re only required to cite course materials, no bibliography is necessary. You can simply cite authors and page numbers to support your quotes.)
Be comprehensive in your citation of course material! Don?t assume that the reader knows all about the concepts in question. You have to demonstrate not just that you can answer the question but that you know what the question is asking. Demonstrate your knowledge of the concept first and then provide an example of fan/audience discourse that demonstrates that! Really, this is just an extended version of your seminar presentations on specific concepts.
You can use subtitles and organize your written assignment according to the numbered questions if you see fit. It may, in fact, help structure your argument.
Though not a formal essay (given its structure), you should have a brief introduction that explains who your audience is and where you found it and a conclusion that summarizes your overall impression of this audience and the nature of the activity you?ve studied.

Philosophy; A Solution to the Gettier Problem? custom essay

[pewslideshow slidename=anim2]

The purpose of this assignment is to get you to write a short but substantive essay on a subject from this course. Specifically, you will be attempting to defend a solution to the problems for epistemology raised by Edmund Gettier.
The word count for this assignment is 800?1200 words, not including title page, reference list, or identification information.
2 Assignment Details 2.1 What to Write
Your short essay should be an answer to this question:
What is a good defense of one solution to the Gettier problem?
Essentially, your thesis statement should be a one-sentence answer to this question and the remainder of your essay should support this thesis statement. Clearly, you will have to fill in the details about what the ?one solution? is. In the body of your essay, it will be important to support your thesis statement through briefly explaining one of the solutions to the Gettier problem, briefly explaining a challenge to that solution offered by Crumley (or another academic source), and then developing a response to that challenge.
Alternatively, you can argue that this response, while a good defense, is ultimately fruitless. In this case, your thesis statement will be slightly different, but this is acceptable.
1
The primary resources for this paper are:
? The papers of Gettier, Feldman, and Pollock in the Moser and vander Nat volume.
? The papers of Goldman (Causal Theory), Swain (Defeasibility), and Mey- ers & Stern (No False Premise) available through JSTOR (links are on WebCT).
? Chapter 2 of Crumley?s book.
You are free to use whatever other sources that you see fit, though you are not required to do so.
I recommend that you begin the essay with a short introductory paragraph that begins with your thesis statement. The remainder of the introductory paragraph can outline the argument that you are presenting in your essay as it will be presented in your essay.
The body paragraphs of your essay should each address a key point that sup- ports your position or that addresses an important objection to your position that you feel you should address. You may write short paragraphs to explain a position on which you will draw before you apply it to your specific recom- mendation. For each paragraph, you should be able to write out a sentence that explains the key idea of that paragraph. (You may want to make sure that sentence, or something much like it, is in that paragraph.)
You do not need a concluding paragraph and having a concluding paragraph is not recommended. You should structure this short essay so that your reader knows your position and can follow your reasoning clearly throughout the paper.
2.2 Style
Use of a particular style is not required, but a consistent style should be used throughout the paper and it is recommended that you stick to an academic style.
Whatever style that you choose, you must follow the following requirements:
? A title and title page is required.
? Each page, except the title page, must have a page number, there is no specific requirement to include the title page in page numbering.
? Lines of text in the body of the essay should be double spaced; long quotations that are separated from the rest of the text may be single spaced.
? You must provide citations to those sources you draw upon for the essay. Citations should provide specific page numbers where possible. You must provide a reference list (this should include the main readings referenced in the assignment).
2
2.3 Information on Title Page
The information on your title page should have the following format (italics not required):
2.4 Writing notes
When writing this assignment, bear the following in mind:
? Your purpose in writing this assignment is to get a good grade, right? However, for the purposes of this assignment, assume that your paper will be used to guide university students in epistemology classes in how to understand responses to the Gettier problem.
? The audience that you should imagine that you are writing for is the rest of the class. You can expect that your audience has access to the readings and has read or soon will read them. You can expect that your audience knows the terminology of the course and has a good vocabulary and can look up any words that they do not understand. (This is not an excuse to use extravagant words unnecessarily; use those words that are specific to the meaning that you need.) Your audience understands the Gettier problem and you do not need to explain it.
? You should write with the appropriate academic/professional tone. If this means that your assignment seems a little boring, so be it; it is best that you clearly communicate your ideas.
? All parts of this assignment should be written using full sentences and paragraphs where possible.
2.5 Submission notes
? A hard copy of this assignment is required. You must submit the hard copy in class or in the Philosophy Department drop box before 3 pm. on day after it is submitted on WebCT.
? You must submit a digital copy of this assignment; this should be done through the course WebCT page. The assignment must be received by
