The Case of Brenda
Brenda is a 66-year-old female who sought counseling because she feels a great deal of guilt over an affair she is having with her husband’s good friend. Brenda is currently married to her high school sweetheart. They have been married for 50 years. She married Richard right after graduation. They had 48 years of “bliss.” She says Richard is her best friend. They have four children together.
Brenda is a retired nurse, and her husband had to retire early because he had a severe stroke 2 years ago that left him paralyzed on the left side of his body. He can no longer speak and needs constant medical care. Richard’s condition has left Brenda feeling alone and sad. She lost her best friend, and there are days he doesn’t recognize her. For the last 2 years she has made sure that Richard’s needs are being met. She stays by his side daily. Richard’s close friend James provides her a great deal of support. He visits daily and provides Brenda with emotional support. He also stays with Richard when Brenda has to run errands. They have become very close in the last 2 years. The two spend a great deal of time together. Recently, Brenda has found herself developing feelings for James, but she feels very “guilty.” She can’t tell her friends, and she needs to talk to someone.
Brenda shares that she and James have been “getting closer.” James told Brenda that he thinks he is “falling in love with her.” Brenda didn’t respond to him initially, but she has recently shared with him that she “feels the same.” They have been having an intimate relationship for a few months.
Brenda finds herself feeling overwhelmed with the emotions and doesn’t know what to do. She knows that her husband’s condition will not improve. Brenda wonders, “Should I stop living my life? What will my children think if they find out? Is this wrong?” Brenda loves her husband, but misses the companionship.
The Case of Marcus
Marcus retired from the police force at the age of 62. He is currently 64 years old. He served his community proudly for 40 years. He lost his girlfriend of 20 years suddenly, shortly after he retired. His girlfriend died of a heart attack. Marcus stills struggles with her passing. He is still very depressed. Marcus sought help for his depression, but he didn’t want to take medication. He’s found comfort in drinking so there is no need for medication.
Marcus was recently arrested for a DWI (driving while intoxicated). One of his friends from the police force pulled him over and discovered he had been drinking. His friend had to arrest him and take him in. Marcus was never a drinker, but after he retired and his girlfriend passed away, alcohol became a “close companion.” He drinks daily, but he doesn’t think he has a problem.
Marcus was court ordered into treatment by the judge. He reluctantly called you to schedule an appointment. During the first session he states that he doesn’t have a drinking problem. “It was just a bad night and I wasn’t wearing my glasses. That is why I ran the red light. I only had a few drinks.” Marcus also reports that he does still feel sad over his girlfriend’s death, but that wasn’t the reason he had a few drinks that night. He reported that he just needed to get out of the house. He feels very alone in the house, and since he retired he doesn’t have much to do. He is tired of feeling lonely, so he likes to go the bar to meet up with old friends. Marcus never planned to be alone during his retirement.
Marcus states, “Retirement isn’t all that everyone thinks it is. Your days are filled with a bunch of time and nothing to do. My kids live out of state, so I see them maybe during the holidays. I tried the volunteer thing, but it really didn’t work for me. Most of my friends are dead or sick. So yeah, I am depressed. My health isn’t the greatest. So I like to drink. It makes me feel better. I’m entitled to that. I’m an old man all alone. Drinking is no big deal. I could stop. So what are you going to do for me?”
