Interpersonal communication: Responses are an opportunity for you to reflect on the content of the chapter and provide an application, analysis, and/or critique of the ideas Custom Essay

Interpersonal communication: Responses are an opportunity for you to reflect on the content of the chapter and provide an application, analysis, and/or critique of the ideas

Reading Responses are an opportunity for you to reflect on the content of the chapter and provide an
application, analysis, and/or critique of the ideas in the text. Further, Reading Responses are a great way
to reflect on the content, and also create a useful study guide for each chapter.

This 2-3 page paper is a combination of 1) an explanation of the specific concepts in the chapter, any
specific definitions that are needed and 2) an application of the concepts, a critique, or an analysis of the
concepts as applied to your life or another example. You must explain the concepts specifically & clearly,
then you must apply, analyze or critique the concepts. Reading Responses will not receive full credit
if they lack specific explanations of the concepts from the text and/or direct connections to
personal examples/analysis/or critique.

Content of the responses:
Reading Responses need to be 2-3 pages in length (2 full pages & no more than 3 pages), must cover the
specific content of the chapter, and provide analysis, application, or critique (or a combination of all
three).

The following are a few suggestions for how you might approach the application portion of the reading
response entry:

A. Give examples of your own communication behaviors that relate to the assigned reading. For
example, you might describe how using one or more of the listening skills from Ch. 7 made a
difference in an interaction you experienced.

B. Analyze the reasons behind your own communication behaviors as these directly relate to the
assigned reading. Why do you choose to communicate in a particular way in a particular
situation? What factors and consequences influence your ability to share, be aware, and be clear?
For example, you might discuss how past experiences influenced your willingness to disclose in a
particular situation. If you find yourself not listening to someone else, you could write about
reasons why that happened.

C. Critique your own communication behavior using ideas from the assigned reading. For example,
you might discuss an example of your listening behavior and evaluate it in terms of the concepts
in Ch. 7. You might discuss an example of a conversation in which you were or weren’t sensitive
to the use of appropriate listening strategies.

D. Critique the ideas and suggestions presented in the assigned reading. For example, you might try
paraphrasing and then write about how well it worked for you. Did it help you achieve your
goals in the interaction and why or why not?

These are a few suggestions. Any one reading response might focus on just one of the ideas suggested
above or might employ several of these ideas, depending on the depth of your analysis.

Grading Criteria
1. You may receive credit for up to 10 reading responses. If a reading response does not receive
credit for any reason, additional responses may be written to bring you back to the maximum of
10. Please submit only one reading response for each class session (the one that is due in order
to receive credit). Reading responses are not retroactive; meaning if you miss one, you cannot make it up for credit. Further, if you do a RR on a chapter that is

not due, you
wont receive credit for it.

2. At the top of your reading response please indicate the chapter or article upon which you are
reflecting, and the number of the response (label your first reading response #1).

3. Use of specific examples from your own communication behavior.
4. Make explicit connection to the reading. To a certain extent, you will be "sharing" with me in
these responses. However, there needs to be a course-related, academic component to that
sharing. Be sure to frame your experiences in terms of the specific concepts from the reading.
The explanation of the specific concepts according to the text should be at least half of
the Reading Response content.

5. CRITICAL THINKING. Your entries should relate examples of concepts (as suggestion "A"
above), but you should also go beyond this level (as in suggestions "B", C, and "D" above).
This is what I mean by "critical thinking."

For example, you could explore the following: Why do you choose to communicate as you do?
Are you able to support any generalizations about interpersonal communication? Do you see
any overall patterns to interpersonal communication? Would you like to change some of your
communication behaviors? Why or why not? Do you find the behaviors and ideas suggested in
the book and in class helpful? Realistic? Why or why not?

6. Organized, clearly expressed thought. Please use complete sentences and maintain a logical flow
to your ideas. Just because this is a response paper, don’t assume that your ideas can be
presented in a random, stream of consciousness fashion. My primary concern is that your style of
writing doesn’t detract from your ideas.

Feedback:
At the conclusion of the response entry, it is also appropriate for you to provide some feedback if you
wish to do so. You may want to ask for clarification of specific ideas. You may also want to provide
suggestions about how we can make your experience in class more productive. Tell me what works and
doesnt work for you in class. The feedback portion of the response is intended to provide on-going
course evaluation in order to make this course serve you well. This part of the reading response, while
important, is not graded.

Skills And Conflict Resolution: The nature and application of the “micro-skills” and processes of conflict resolution needed for a person to implement conflict resolution strategies successfully in practice and to institute conflict Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Skills And Conflict Resolution: The nature and application of the “micro-skills” and processes of conflict resolution needed for a person to implement conflict resolution strategies successfully in practice and to institute conflict prevention/resolution systems in an ethically responsible manner

This subject covers the nature and application of the “micro-skills” and processes of conflict resolution needed for a person to implement conflict resolution

strategies successfully in practice and to institute conflict prevention/resolution systems in an ethically responsible manner. Task – Answer both questions

Question 1

Choose a conflict with which you are familiar within or between organisations or between individual people. With description of the stakeholders, and the dispute

involved, identify the core issues and outline the difficulties in resolving the issues. In answering this question refer to the 12 skills of conflict resolution,

according to the CRN materials that seem relevant, explain why they can or cannot be applied, and attempt a ‘solution’ (however tentative) of the conflict.

Question 2

Conflict resolution skills and processes can at times be limited by power, culture and ethics. Critically discuss this statement with reference to your study

materials an this session. (please read Topic 2.1, 2.2 or 2.3 before completing this question)

Rationale

Question 1 Rationale The object of this assignment is to test your understanding of the ‘fit’ between conflict/issue and skill usage. You can demonstrate this as

before (Assessment item 1, Option A) by going into detail on ‘the five W’s’ and also ‘To whom?’ and ‘How?’ Clearly some skills will not be very relevant in some

cases, and indispensable in others. Question 2 Rationale This option allows and requires you to look at the limits of the skills posed by power, culture and poor

ethics of one or more parties. This requires explanation and demonstration of the principles involved and students should try to give clear examples to show their

grasp of the concepts, while avoiding sweeping generalisations.

This assignment is due by October 6 at 11:59 p.m. CST.
This is an example of a crucial conversation I had to use in the paper.
I have never been the silent type. I have no problem speaking up for myself or on the behalf of others. Unfortunately, that can be a good quality to possess as well

as bad one. People always know where I stand. However, there were times when people saw me as being harsh, rude, mean or demanding. On the flip side, people tell me

that they value my opinion and outlook because they know I am straight up concerning my morals, values and beliefs. I believe that having an understanding of

different personality types is extremely important in learning how to better communicate with others. Misunderstanding someone can lead to an uncomfortable and

unhealthy work environment for everyone.
About five years ago, I was working in an outpatient surgery department in a hospital. I was assisting a new employee, who only had two years of nursing experience

under her belt, with one of her patients. As I was starting the patient’s IV, the patient and I talked about some of his past medical history. I learned, through the

patient, that he had a history of seizures and restless leg syndrome. His last seizure was two weeks prior to the day of his surgery. The anesthesiologist came to

the nursing desk and asked who had the patient in room eight. The new nurse informed the MDA that she was the one taking care of that patient. The MDA told her that

he was ordering IV Reglan preoperatively. I immediately interjected and informed the MDA that the patient had a history of seizures and RLS. The MDA said, “What does

that matter?” I responded, “Reglan is contraindicated in people who have seizures and RLS. I do not think it would be wise for the patient to possibly have a seizure

prior to surgery or trigger his RLS when the surgeon is operating on his left knee”. He looked at me, then looked at the new nurse and said, “Give the Reglan, as I

ordered” and walked off. The new nurse got up from her chair and proceeded to the medication room. I stopped her and told her not to give the medication. She stated

that she did not know what to do. I went back to my computer, pulled up, printed out, and highlighted the information that supported my statement. I phoned the MDA

to return to the nursing desk. I handed him the information. He read it, apologized and told me he was not aware of the contraindication. He thanked me later that

day for standing my ground. Mistakes, disrespect and incompetence are three of the seven healthcare communications occurrences that happened in my health care

experience. What this all boils down to, is that we are all human and capable of making mistakes, even if we have the MD abbreviation behind are names. It is our

nursing duty, no matter how uncomfortable it may be, to speak up as advocates for our patients.
