Section 1: Describe a Crucial Conversation. Describe a crucial conversation from your personal experience. Present this scenario as a case study. Define the elements
of a crucial conversation using the three elements: high stakes, strong emotions, and opposing opinions. Recall that sometimes conversations turn crucial quickly and
that they may surprise you unwittingly. Was this a crucial conversation that evolved quickly or slowly? What was at stake? Why? Was it handled well? Poorly? How so?
Was it resolved? If not, why not? This section should present thorough and specific factors contributing to the problem. (25%)
Section 2: Discuss Strategies. Discuss strategies (communication models, crucial conversation skills, healthy work environments, and others from the literature) and
offer possible methods to better address the topic of your crucial conversation in the future. This section should present thorough and specific strategies to
address the problem. (25%)
Section 3: Apply Leadership. What part does leadership play in improving communication? Does being an advanced practice nurse require greater leadership in
addressing and resolving problems? If so, how? This section should present thorough and specific leadership strategies to address the problem in a nursing context.

3. Your paper will also be assessed using the following guidelines:
References. Throughout the paper, you should cite evidence from the course and external literature to support your descriptions of problems and strategies. (10%)
Grammar and Mechanics. Your writing should be clear and grammatically correct, using appropriate APA format, including cover page and reference page. Your paper
should be three pages double-spaced, excluding title page and references. (15%) No abstract needed.

This is an example of a crucial conversation I had to use in the paper.
I have never been the silent type. I have no problem speaking up for myself or on the behalf of others. Unfortunately, that can be a good quality to possess as well
as bad one. People always know where I stand. However, there were times when people saw me as being harsh, rude, mean or demanding. On the flip side, people tell me
that they value my opinion and outlook because they know I am straight up concerning my morals, values and beliefs. I believe that having an understanding of
different personality types is extremely important in learning how to better communicate with others. Misunderstanding someone can lead to an uncomfortable and
unhealthy work environment for everyone.
About five years ago, I was working in an outpatient surgery department in a hospital. I was assisting a new employee, who only had two years of nursing experience
under her belt, with one of her patients. As I was starting the patient’s IV, the patient and I talked about some of his past medical history. I learned, through the
patient, that he had a history of seizures and restless leg syndrome. His last seizure was two weeks prior to the day of his surgery. The anesthesiologist came to
the nursing desk and asked who had the patient in room eight. The new nurse informed the MDA that she was the one taking care of that patient. The MDA told her that
he was ordering IV Reglan preoperatively. I immediately interjected and informed the MDA that the patient had a history of seizures and RLS. The MDA said, “What does
that matter?” I responded, “Reglan is contraindicated in people who have seizures and RLS. I do not think it would be wise for the patient to possibly have a seizure
prior to surgery or trigger his RLS when the surgeon is operating on his left knee”. He looked at me, then looked at the new nurse and said, “Give the Reglan, as I
ordered” and walked off. The new nurse got up from her chair and proceeded to the medication room. I stopped her and told her not to give the medication. She stated
that she did not know what to do. I went back to my computer, pulled up, printed out, and highlighted the information that supported my statement. I phoned the MDA
to return to the nursing desk. I handed him the information. He read it, apologized and told me he was not aware of the contraindication. He thanked me later that
day for standing my ground. Mistakes, disrespect and incompetence are three of the seven healthcare communications occurrences that happened in my health care
experience. What this all boils down to, is that we are all human and capable of making mistakes, even if we have the MD abbreviation behind are names. It is our
nursing duty, no matter how uncomfortable it may be, to speak up as advocates for our patients.
