Self and Society: Emotions and Social Experience Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

“In post-traditional contexts, we have no choice but to choose how to be and how to act (Giddens 1996: 28).”

Compare and assess how two of the following: a) emotions and their social regulation/performance; b) therapy culture; c) contemporary tribalism; d) individualization; e) globalization; f) communication; promote or impede the development of post-traditional identities. Is it correct to claim that contemporary identities are predominantly post-traditional?

Few would disagree with the idea that the experience of emotions is tightly interwoven with an individual’s sense of self. Indeed, the Australian sociologist Jack Barbalet has suggested that one can define emotions as the experiences of intense forms of involvement. Emotions exhibit a sense of the investment of the self in something or, especially, some other person. Emotions often manifest themselves in 11
bodily and physical forms, such as crying in relation to grief or smiling when happy. At the same time, emotions seem to be a type of experience that can be shared, even dependent on an individual’s relationships to others. Nonetheless, emotions are sometimes viewed with a certain amount of scepticism, seen as reflecting a lapse in rationality and the loss of self-control. A scientific culture may find emotions hard to verify, famous dramas play out the conflict between emotions and moral norms, and individuals can find that they are indifferent to things, situations and relationships that previously affected them deeply. The social experience of emotions has been a topic of considerable interest to sociologists for a long-time, though it was often discussed under other categories. More recently, the sociology of emotions has been consolidated as a distinctive field of research, generating innovative accounts of diverse realms of experience and the dynamics of social interaction. Do emotions tell us as much about society as they do about the self?

Week 11 The Reconstruction of Personality

For Giddens, the self has become experimental. The period of late-modernity requires the continuous reconstruction of identity. In this way, the principles of psychotherapy obtain a general importance and the experience of contingency compels agency. To the extent that these changes in the formation of identity are connected to dialogue and reflection, a process of democratizing society may be incipient in them. Yet, it is also possible, as Foucault suggested, that such a concern with personality extends surveillance to the soul. Rose develops this governmentality line of analysis and its questioning of liberal ideas of freedom. These alternative and, at the same time, interconnected perspectives occupy a pivotal position today in the sociological debates concerning the self, subjectivity and identity.

Week 12 Tribal Identity / Total Individuality

Do the recent discussion of the contemporary world do anything more than reiterate the early debates about the relationship of the individual and the collective? The analysis of the present seems to turn up basic alternatives, yet a closer inspection suggests a more complex interpenetration. Do we search for community? Look for ways to transcend our own self? Do we seek to find and express the specificity of our own individual identity through group membership? Is preserving individual freedom our highest value today?

Four Managerial Functions-General Motors: Description: Select an organization (General Motors) and describe the four managerial functions: planning, organizing, leading and controlling Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Use your text as a reference for describing the styles, types, and categories you observe. Your description of planning should include how the business sets goals and defines the actions necessary to carry out plans. A description of annual goal setting or planning meetings may be included for this purpose. Your discussion of organizing should include what type of tasks must be accomplished (in broad terms) and who is assigned to perform and manage them. In other words, what types of jobs does the business have and how are they managed. Describe the type of organization by determining the number of levels in the hierarchy and developing a simplified organizational chart. There are specific APA instructions for inserting a chart into an APA document. Make sure you adhere to those instructions.
Your description of leadership in the organization should include management styles, the management school of thought influencing that style, the manager’s knowledge of individual and group behavior, and ability to motivate and communicate. Limit this discussion to one or two specific managers in the organization and briefly describe their leadership styles while leading the organization. Refer to chapters 11-14 for information.
In discussing the controlling function, include the methods for monitoring the performance of the organization plus techniques for identifying and correcting deviations between planned and actual results. Specifically, discuss methods for performance reviews and the budgeting process. Refer to chapters 15-16 for information.
Requirements: The paper must be well written with proper grammar, spelling, punctuation, and references. The research papers will be a minimum of 5 to 6 typed pages plus a cover page and a reference page; bringing the total to 7 or 8 pages. The paper will be double-spaced using 12-point “Times New Roman” font and standard one-inch margins. The paper must be correctly formatted and documented using the APA style. An abstract is not required.
Specific description (assembling the paper): The paper should consist of the following sections:
 Introduction: Describe the purpose of the paper by identifying your organization and clearly stating your thesis. This is the information that you will show or prove about the organization. A thesis might include a statement such as:
“The XYZ Corporation is a well-managed organization that is preparing for
success in the future” or, “The XYZ Corporation has several flaws that might
limit success in the future.” .
 Background: Provide some historical perspective for the organization. You should research and include references that provide this background information.
 Analysis: Your discussion of each of the four managerial functions is included in this section. Size: This is the main body of your research paper so prepare about one page each for the four functions, four pages total. This section will provide support for this thesis.
 Conclusion: Discuss how your thesis was proved or demonstrated and provide the lessons learned from the subject.
 References – At least five (5) peer review sources must be cited in addition to the text.
 Sources: You must use scholarly sources only (peer review journal articles or books) for this research assignment. Use primary sources whenever possible.
