The state is, however offering a large financial package for education to the local school district. There is a chance that large box stores such as Wal-Mart may come in. Bob�s hardware and the Five and Dime along with other local businesses are afraid that they will be put out of business. In a move to gain more support for the proposition, the state gave money to the town to increase their store-fronts� attractiveness.
The following is information regarding two families who live in the town. Each family will decide whether to allow the highway or fight to keep the town as is. The Smiths: Don is a teacher who is married to Sue who has a small quilting shop on Main Street. Sue�s dad has been a farmer on the same land her great granddad farmed. He is planning to retire in a year or so but Sue is his only child and does not want the farm. Don had three brothers. One owns a gas station that would be less than a quarter of a mile away from the proposed highway. His other brother runs a small grocer. There is no grocery store for 20 miles so he does well for his four kids. The state funds helped get a new coat of paint on the store as well as a new door and striping on the parking lot. Don�s other brother is unemployed. What side will the family take on the issue and why? Provide justification for your answers using research.
The Carsons: Fred is the town mayor. He is up for re-election next year. This fact makes Fred�s wife Susan very wary of the situation with the highway. Susan owns a coffee shop and runs it with her two daughters. It is lively in the morning, but business slows down in the afternoon so they often close early. Susan�s daughter is married to Butch. Butch works for one of the farms driving a tractor during harvest and moving wheel lines the rest of the year. Butch�s mother is an environmentalist. She doesn�t like irrigation because of the impact to the eco-system but she hates the pollution the highway would bring even more.
