At first, the answer anyone would give seems obvious: they must be crazy and have irrational thoughts to blow themselves up and kill innocent people in the process. However, terrorism experts have proposed several rational motives for their actions. Some political scientists believe that terrorists make a tactical choice to use suicide bombings against a stronger enemy. Other experts argue that suicide terrorism is part of a cycle of humiliation fueled by a suicide bombers desire to strike back at those who have mistreated or shamed them. Some psychologists have concluded that suicide bombers are ordinary, everyday people who are unlikely to commit violent acts until they identify with and join a terrorist group which manipulates and pressures them to commit these violent acts
Research Question, Purpose Statement, and Citation Format
write a deductive social science research proposal based on the research question. The paper will follow the conventional format for deductive social science research proposals, which normally consists of four sections plus a reference list.
A formal research proposal will be prepared in accordance with the standards of the academic discipline. The formal proposal must provide a clear and lucid description of a question or problem, the purpose statement and a proposed method of answering the question or solving the problem. Proposal drafting is considered a learning process and helps the students avoid oversights and possible mistakes.
The proposal should explain the question or problem to be investigated and convince the professor and department that the question or problem merits investigation. It should show that the student has read the relevant and recent literature on the subject and it should contain a list of materials consulted during the preliminary stages of research. In general, the research question and purpose statement should include background information related to the research topic, purpose of the research, and investigatory procedures to be used. The formal proposal should not exceed eight (8) pages (proposal title page not included).
Introduction. Identifies your specific research question and sets the general context for the study.
Literature Review. Reviews the literature on a specific research question. The literature review focuses on discussing how other researchers have addressed the same of similar research questions.
Theoretical Framework. The Theoretical Framework section develops the theories or models to be used in the study and shows how you have developed testable research hypotheses.
Research Design. Describes how you carry out your analysis. Describes the data you will use substantiate your research, how you will operationalize and collect data on your variables, and the analytic methods that you will use, noting potential biases and limitations to your research approach.
Reference List. References the works that you have cited in the text (8-10 is normal).
Research Proposal Outline (Use as a self-check before submitting your final paper.)
Title Block (paper title, student name, course, universitya title page, table of contents, abstracts, etc., are not required).
I. Introduction (2 pages maximum) (introduces study, places in larger context, tells why it is important we study this case).
Statement of the problem or general research question and context leading to a clear statement of the specific research question.
Background and contextual material justifying why we should study this case or topic.
Purpose statement.
II. Literature Review (2 pages maximum) (provides current state of our accumulated knowledge as it relates to your specific research question)
Summarize the general state of the literature (cumulative knowledge base) on the specific research question.
Study 1summarize to include researchers findings, how those findings were obtained, and evaluation of biases in the findings.
Study 2 summarize to include researchers findings, how those findings were obtained, and evaluation of biases in the findings.
Etc., etc.(3-4 most important studies are minimum effort required).
Short conclusion and transition to Theoretical Framework section.
III. Research Design and Methods (4 pages maximum) (tells how you will test the hypothesis).
Identification and operationalization (measurement) of variables.
Sampling plan (i.e., study population and sampling procedures, if appropriate).
Justification of case studies used.
Data Collection/Sources (secondary literature, archives, interviews, surveys, etc.).
Summary of analysis procedures (pattern-matching, etc.).
Limitations of study and bias discussion.
IV. Reference List (8-10 for most studies). Turabian (7th Edition, Chap 19) parenthetical-reference list citation style formatting is required in the entire paper. Limit this section to 1 page or less.
V. Appendixes (tables, graphs, diagrams, etc., not presented in text).
WRITING EXPECTATIONS
The assignment must be typed in double-spaced format. Set all margins at one (1) inch. Use MS Word 12 or similar font size, black lettering and white backgrounds; and standard font style (Times New Roman or Ariel preferred). If graphics are included in assignments (tables, graphs, diagrams, etc.), place them either in the text just after where they are first cited (i.e., at the next paragraph break) or as an appendix. Use black and white formats for all graphics. Avoid large and colored graphics files that take considerable time to upload online. Pages must be numbered.
