Speech Analysis: Throughout this course, you have encountered new ideas, theories and concepts, rhetorical tools and devices, and terminology with regard to public speaking. Think about a speaker/speech you would like to research and write about. This assignment emphasizes the following: critical thinking, ability to analyze, and communication. This paper is an analysis of a speech of significance. The paper should address the following competencies:
a) describe why the speech being analyzed is important of,
b) describe the way that the speech treats the issues commented upon,
c) provide insight into the internal workings of the speech,
d) compare and contrast other speeches used this semester; refers to MLK "I have a dream", Kennedy "Speech to the greater Houston Ministerial Association", Steven Hatfill "person of interest", FDR "The Arsenal of Democracy", Sumner "The Forgotten Man", Douglas "What to the slave is the 4th of July?", Grady "The New South"
e) apply �terms to know�; refers to logical fallacies; ad hominem, bandwagon appeals, begging the question, burden of proof, causal fallacy, circular reasoning, down-players, perfectionist fallacy, persuasive comparison, poisoning the well, proof surrogate, red herring, slippery slope, straw man, weaseler, false dichotomy, genetic fallacy, hasty generalization, sarcasm, hyperbole, innuendo, line drawing fallacy, loaded question.
f) be at least 5 pages in length.
g) demonstrate your ability to critically analyze a speech
h) assess its contribution or effect to public policy, public discourse, or culture

TECHNICALITIES/FORMATTING FOR THE ASSIGNMENT
If you have progressed this far in the university system, the expectation is that you are able to write a coherent sentence, a good topic sentence and to develop a paragraph and a small essay. Your punctuation should be good, and you should be able to spell well. You should at least be able to run a spell and punctuation check. Of course, no one is perfect, and you will probably make some minor or typographical errors. I do not expect you to make many. If your writing skills are minimal or if English is your second language, utilize the Student Learning Center for assistance before turning in your work. If you have questions about a particular assignment, please ask for further explanations.
� At a minimum you are to provide the necessary background to familiarize me with the text that you have chosen, explain what makes this speech �remarkable,� identify key structural features in the speech, and evaluate the rhetorical strategies used in the speech.
� Compare and contrast your selection to speakers we have covered this semester. For your benefit, try and select a speech that has not be overdone in the media. Be creative with your selection and do not use a speech that was presented in class.
� Ideally, you will be able to describe the rhetorical situation that generated the speech and engage in the public controversy as both a critic and as an advocate. In other words, I hope that you see public speaking as an important tool of social policy and that your paper will display your ability to understand the effects of public speaking and demonstrate your ability to utilize your criticism to engage the social world.
� Poor papers are those that simply describe a speech with little insight or evaluation.
� Average papers evaluate the speech but their conclusions are sometime too superficial.
� Good papers demonstrate a complexity of thought that goes beyond what I would expect from a smart person who has not taken this class. Interesting conclusions are much more valuable than obvious ones. In other words, the quality of insight and analysis is necessary!
� A copy of the speech, the �Turnitin� originality report (see attached directions), must be attached to the paper. I will not accept late or e-mailed papers. I will accept a DVD recording if you can�t find the text of the speech.
� Do not use a paper from another class assignment. This is as bad as plagiarism and a form of cheating; not to mention it is easy to detect and against the code of conduct of the University.
� Make sure you give yourself enough time to complete this assignment. This assignment is worth 20% of your grade.
� The speech must be between 1998- and the current day. I will not accept any speeches older than 1998. There are plenty of speeches to choose for this assignment. Look at speech sites, look at YouTube, watch the news, etc.
� The paper must be double spaced, New Time Roman, 12 Font, 1-inch margins on all four sides. I am not trying to be a taskmaster, I just need to be able to read and write on the papers. There must be an APA bibliography attached for all information used from outside sources.
� If your paper is 20% quotes and it is only 5 pages long, this amounts to only about 4 pages of your own work and I want to read what you have to say. Quotes should be used as support and reference.
