As we discussed briefly, there is a transition through time of certain recurring themes in our narratives. On one level of analysis, these can be called archetypes, or unchanging forms. The suggestion has been made that archetypes, perhaps not innate to our mind, are at the very least a product of our species that comes from living and dealing with the kinds of things that human beings face, and these patterns are also obviously effected by the types of cultural arrangements from which they emerge. A Japanese movie that refers to its own culture is going to do something different than a movie about the wild west of the 1800’s in North America, but the same archetypal patterns are none-the-less to be found. A conscious example of this would be a comparison of Akira Kurosawa’s The Seven Samurai compared to John Sturges’ The Magnificent Seven. There is also a tendency for a culture to deflate patterns that have become lifeless through overuse (though when artfully done an archetype can retain its power even if it has been done many times before. This depends on the artist)…in this way Archetypes become stereotypes, in that the exact same story is told so close to its original form, and is so well known, that nothing exiting can be had….when this happens a form or pattern is ripe for satire. Colbert is a satire of a particular type of stereotypical conservative news anchor pundit, Brian in Monty Python’s Life of Brian is a satiristic version of the messianic figure in history, as well as a satire of the type of film with which the narrative is typically associated. The satire can address social norms, patterns of narrative, ways those narratives are told, etc.
You can choose from any arrangement that interest you. You are to choose a type of satire and on what your chosen satire is about, based on, etc. Focus in on what specifically you find effective and briefly explain why. You can also choose a set of archetypal patterns that transfer from one movie to another that is not inherently satire if you would prefer. Since you have a wide range of potential choices, narrow yourself to a few choices so that you can discuss them a bit.
