Write a 3-5 page essay, in MLA format, that describes your take on the topics we’ve discussed in class while comparing your ideas to someone we’ve read. The paper should be a careful balancing of “they say” and “I say.” You’ll write what’s called a “comparative analysis” where you use another individual’s writing to bring in your own voice and respond critically. In other words, you should pay close attention both the authors we’ve studied in class, as well as your own perspectives of these ideas: how does technology shape our identities?, or have you observed, and how do you understand technology? What components come together to create your identity? Think of the paper as a chance to express your own voice in a conversation with the authors you’ve read.
I. GETTING STARTED: Re-read (( Turkle, S. How computers change the way we think. The Chronicle of Higher Education. 50 (2004); (21).and decide how you agree, disagree, or do a little of both. Try to pick an overall theme you want to respond to. This theme should be something the author addresses in-depth, as well as something to which you, yourself, are willing to respond.
THESIS: What is your main point about technology, identity, and how they interact? What is your central point of response to the ideas in the essay you chose to respond to, and how do you add your own voice to the conversation? This should be a strong, connective point that appears early on in the essay, and guides the sub-points of the rest of the essay.
II. THEY SAY: Keeping your thesis in mind, introduce the author’s argument by summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting the original text. Mention the essay’s thesis and supporting points, but focus mostly on the sections of the essay that concern your specific theme and thesis. Then, write at least one paragraph in which you compare and contrast the author’s views on this theme with yours.
III. I SAY: Now, write a few paragraphs describing your own experiences and ideas concerning this theme and show how your ideas relate to the two authors’ arguments. Engage thoughtfully with the claims of each author as you voice your own ideas: your thesis. Essentially, this part of the essay is your time to formulate your own view on the theme you’ve chosen. At the end of the paper, devote a paragraph to any concluding, furthering questions or comments you’ve come to through thinking and writing this paper.
