Assignment: In a thesis-driven paper of 3 pages, describe and analyze a photograph: this essay asks you to move from description and summary into interpretation and analysis. Your thesis should express your main idea about what you think the photograph means, based on your analysis of the details you’ve noticed while studying it. Your description of the details you’ve noticed will offer evidence to the reader of your interpretation of the photo’s meaning.
There can be many different interpretations of a photo’s meaning, so your goal here is to explain what the photo means to you as an observer and to demonstrate your idea to the reader by backing it up with lots of evidence (your specific observations of the photo).
Your paper will develop your observations and descriptions into a central idea (your thesis) by…
• providing concrete and detailed description of the photograph as evidence for your interpretation of the photo’s meaning, and
• carefully explaining what you interpret to be the meaning(s) of the photograph (ask yourself, “What unspoken—implicit—ideas does the photograph seem to be voicing?”)
You must make the implicit explicit by using specific examples/description and clear explanations of your reasoning as you discuss your interpretation of the meaning(s) of the photograph. Though your essay will include a lot of description, it’s not enough to simply list details about each image: you need a central idea (your thesis) regarding the photograph’s meaning.
Your essay should be 3 pages in length. State your thesis clearly in a succinct statement at the beginning of your essay. Support your thesis by referring to specific details you’ve observed in the photograph and thorough explanations of your interpretation of the meanings/ideas in the photograph. Make sure that you connect each body paragraph to the central idea (the thesis) of your paper.
Different people notice different things when they look at visual art, so you need to be specific to try and help your reader look closely at the photograph to be able to see the same things that you notice. As with literature, there’s no one “correct” way to see visual art or to interpret what it means, but you must back up your ideas by pointing out specific details as they constitute your evidence.
I’ll look for strong topic sentences which link your body paragraphs back to your thesis, coherent paragraphs, clear organization, and sufficient evidence and explanations for your main points. Please see the handout on developing strong paragraphs for more ideas. I do deduct points for errors in spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Use MLA format, and remember to include a “Work Cited” list for this essay with a citation for the photo. For most of these photos, the artist is unknown, but you have other information you can include in the citation.
