Confrontation with the reality (or lack thereof) of one’s own life sets the problem of determining the meaningfulness of one’s existence. One cannot answer the question “What is the meaning of life?” without understanding the meaning of the word “life.” What is this thing called life? If one is to find meaning in life or to make a life meaningful, where precisely should one focus one’s attention? And why?
The texts we have read since Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics have each considered the problem of the meaning of life in the context of either creating or destroying certain boundaries of existence: faith versus knowledge (Job); eternal v. ephemeral, collective v. individual (Marcus Aurelius); natural v. artificial (Lao Tzu); obligatory v. supererogatory, godly v. profane (Nizam ad-din Awliya); public v. private (Kant); real v. illusory, moral v. immoral, transcendent v. sensual (Nietzsche); personal v. political (Singer, Gandhi); life v. death, personal v. official (Tolstoy); and so on.

Imagine you are near the moment of your death and have an unborn grandchild you will never see. Drawing on crucial passages or ideas from at least two and at most four of the texts we have read during the past weeks , write a letter to this grandchild that engages the questions mentioned above: “What is life all about? Where should one focus one’s attention to create meaning?” Why?” In this letter, you should:
1) Articulate an argument for a position regarding life and what makes it meaningful that you reject. This initial argument should express the view of one of the authors that we have read.
2) Rebut that argument, indicating why it does not succeed. This rebuttal should express the view of a different author that we have read.
3) Articulate an argument for the position you accept. This final argument should not simply repeat the rebuttal from the previous section. It may either elaborate upon that argument or it may present a new one. Furthermore, this final argument may reflect a single author’s view; a combination of two authors’ views; or a single author’s view plus your own original view. For example, you could make your first argument using Kant; rebut that using Gandhi; and then use Singer (and, perhaps, your own insights) to make your final argument.
