FAMILY VIOLENCE AND ABUSE; For this assignment, you will research punishment and treatment of parents who abuse their children and, based on what you learn from your research Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

FAMILY VIOLENCE AND ABUSE; For this assignment, you will research punishment and treatment of parents who abuse their children and, based on what you learn from your research, you will write a paper in which you argue whether you believe that punishment or treatment is the more appropriate approach to dealing with child abuse.

Here is some more context for this assignment:
There are primarily two ways to deal with parents who abuse their children—punishment and treatment. The most frequently used intervention is treatment. The primary goal Child Preventive Services is to intervene into the family, providing support and services (parenting education and anger management) to prevent the removal of the child from the home. The second, less frequently used method is to prosecute the parents in criminal court. This assignment will test your skills at doing research in the on-line library. Another way to say this: “It is a challenging assignment!” The assignment gives you an opportunity to explore a nagging question about what to do with parents that abuse their children.
Lisa, from an earlier class wrote:
When reading about the different models of child abusers the environmental-sociological-cultural model struck me as bizarre. So big deal someone lacks an education or lacks child rearing skills and this in the eyes of Cynthia Crosson Tower, who devised these models is a reason why one might abuse a child. It seems to me that this is a cop out. I guess what she is basically trying to say is that if someone’s life is a shambles they may take it out on the poor child. For me there has to be more to it then that. Even if you have no “child rearing skills” you would still know that abusing a child is not the right thing to do. Is it just me or is this a bad model?
In another class, Melanie asks about rehabilitation for parents that abuse their children:
In Chapter II, accepted theories of the causes of child abuse are discussed. Specifically, several theories are grouped into three distinct models/headings: ‘the psychopathological’, ‘the interactional’ and ‘the environ./socio./cultural’ model. In reading the various theories under each model, it seems futile to even hope that abusers could somehow, over time become loving, proper caregivers. Lack of bonding between parent/child, dysfunctional family, stress from social & psychological factors, chance events and family structure are just a few of the causes that are discussed. The causes are multifaceted. Often-times the causes are intertwined with one’s personality, their environment, family, or economics. Can such complex causes be ‘fixed?’ Can an abuser be rehabilitated enough to trust them with the care of children?
Joegave this response to Melanie:
Such causes may never be “fixed” but with all of the support programs out there, through classes, training, and therapy, an abuser can learn to control their anger, stress and frustration, without taking it out on their children. Here on Fort Drum there is many programs offered under the Family Advocacy Program, such as Anger Management and Parenting classes. Trusting children with former abusers may be a difficult process, and it should be done slowly. The children may be able to stay others places sometimes while the parents slowly learn to raise their children without any form of violence or neglect. But with time, it is possible to trust a rehabilitated abuser enough to care for their children, as long as the treatment and therapy is not piled on in too short a period of time.
So you can see that the topic of how to deal with parents that abuse their children is certainly open for discussion. They typical response to beating and battering children is to engage the family in treatment and services to prevent placing the child in foster care. For contrast, it is interesting to note that the typical response to spouse abuse is arrest. So Lisa’s comment that the situation is bizarre may have some validity. Chalk (1997) offers this explanation for the differing responses to child abuse;
Those who are opposed to criminal action believe that it hurts the family, that the criminal justice system is insensitive to families’ and children’s needs, and that district attorneys and police officers focus more on prosecution than on referrals for treatment and services. Those who favor criminal prosecution believe that it is an effective way to enforce the laws, deter future abuse, discourage unacceptable behavior, and coerce individuals into treatment (p. 168).
How to Approach this Research
As happens with most research projects, there is more then one way to approach the task. I will provide you with a couple examples but you can use your own ideas.
I. You can approach this assignment from a generalist perspective, that is looking at research articles, policy , and other supporting information to draw your conclusions. This is the approach I expect most students to take because there is more information available when you look at the big picture. Consequently, less time will need to be spent on searching for information but you will have to do a more work integrating the information (cutting and pasting a string of quotes from the text, articles, and web sites is a sure way to get a poor grade).
II. Another way to do the assignment is to look at specific areas within the big picture. For example, exploring the issue of mother that murder their children (live-in boyfriends are good subjects also) or children abused while in foster care to identify how these cases are handled, prevention or prosecution. As you can see, you will do better if you have some research skills but on the other hand you have less integration to do because of the narrow topic.
III. The third way is to examine this issue from a policy perspective, in this case both federal and state because the federal government is establishing requirements for the states. I conceive this to be the least popular approach because most students are not interested in policy. There are exceptions and if you are one of those persons that enjoys knowing why government and agencies do the things the way they do them, you will enjoy this approach.

Womens Rights in Africa and Where They Are Now; “Use the two thesis to do my research paper Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Womens Rights in Africa and Where They Are Now; “Use the two thesis to do my research paper. It will be about womens rights in africa and where they are now. I have the two thesis statements separated so that you can tell the difference”.

(1)
The attainment of an equal society for women in Africa has been a gradual but progressive process as a number of countries currently formulate and implement policies that are pro-women in nature (Jing 21). For a long time African societies have treated women poorly by denying them access to resources and opportunities their male counterparts had access to by birth right. This has in turn resulted in an imbalanced society, in which men occupy all the positions of leadership at the expense of women who perform basic home management roles (Oduyoye 12). The research therefore seeks to investigate the types of exploitations leveled against women. It further investigates how the modern day African societies reverse the effect of such retrogressive beliefs, which have contributed to the denial of human rights to women in the societies.
In doing the research analyses a number of sources primary of which are films and videos obtained from you tube and other digital video disc formats. These videos depict the different forms of women maltreatments and the rights denial mechanisms that the African women face in their daily lives. Some of these videos show how the female genital mutilation a vice that have through time denied the African girl child equal academic opportunity since after the practice the young girls are immediately married off to elderly men (Ogundipe-Leslie 21). The research also uses secondary sources, which include books and newspaper articles, which recount the struggle of the African woman for liberty and equal opportunity in the society. These seek to depict the progresses made by different governments in the continent to level the playing ground for both sexes thus uplift the status of the girl child thus that of the African woman by extrapolation (Rwomire 11).
(2)
Women’s Rights in Africa and Where They Are Now
There have been a number of changes on my project since the initial presentation and this will have a great impact on the final presentation (African Woman 18). The most significant change in my research project is the inclusion of additional subjects of research. During the review of research studies on the topic of women rights, I discovered that women are no longer afraid of facing the challenges presented by the African culture such as abuse and neglect. They have responded to their challenges by forming human rights groups aimed at campaigning against the infringement of human rights. Therefore, the thesis statement will include the participation of human rights activists in achievement freedom for the African woman (Ogundipe-Leslie 21).
The discovery of the role of human rights activism has altered my view that women are mainly oppressed by men because a number of such organizations are operated under the leadership of males (Oduyoye 54). Some of the new pieces of information that I encountered during my review of literature information include the need to legitimize universal human rights and societal attitude towards women rights (Rwomire 21). Therefore, the paper will discuss how the African continent has made commitments towards ensuring that international human rights are applied across the continent and how society is reacting to human rights activism.
Gender equality is a real problem in African society because men are considered to be superior while women are considered inferior (Jing 18). Eventually, the continent has recorded one of the highest number of female abuse and violation of women rights. In response to the problem, various governments and NGOs are increasingly involved in the protection of women rights. Therefore, women are currently enjoying universal human rights through a number of programs such as affirmative action (Oduyoye 22).
