Human Rights Violations – Factors and Consequences: Many governments officially support the idea of human rights for all, yet there are violations occurring around the world Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Discussion 2

Many governments officially support the idea of human rights for all, yet there are violations occurring around the world. Human rights violations are nothing new. Historically, human rights violations have been rooted in group exclusion. Take for example the treatment of Jewish people in Nazi Germany or the treatment of Aborigines in Australia. In each case, the excluded group was subject to human rights violations on a grand scale. Human rights violations may be wide-ranging and persistent in some places where there is ongoing warfare, poverty, and discrimination. Factors that contribute to human rights violations include politics, economics, or group conflict. When human rights violations are left unchecked, there may be long-term consequences for victims and communities.

To prepare for this Discussion:

• Review Chapters 11, 12, and 13 in your course text Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice. Focus on issues related to human rights such as political participation, economic development, individual and group rights, and nondiscrimination. Consider how those issues also relate to human rights violations.

•Review the article, "The Contemporary Significance of International Human Rights Law". Consider economic and political consequences for states that engage in human rights violations. (Article: Buergenthal, T. (2009). The contemporary significance of international human rights law. Leiden Journal of International Law, 22(2), 217 – 223)

•Use the map to view human rights violations around the globe. Make sure to pay attention to the causes of violations. http://mym.cdn.laureate-media.com/2dett4d/Walden/CRJS/4150/02/mm/humanrights/index.html

•Search the Human Rights Watch website for examples of human rights violations and abuses.

•Select a human rights violation to use for this Discussion.

•Think about the factors that contribute to this human rights violation.

•Consider consequences of this violation (locally and/or internationally).

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the human rights violation you selected. Then describe two factors that may contribute to this human rights violation. Finally, explain at least two consequences of the human rights violation (locally and/or internationally). Be specific.

Note: Identify the human rights violation you selected in the first line of your post.

Discussion 3
U.S. Human Rights Violations

The idea that human rights are a Western conception is a topic of contemporary debate. Given the democratic ideals of human rights, it seems plausible that the concept of human rights did in fact originate in the West. The United States for example, prides itself on the fundamental principle that individual rights and freedoms of all people are to be respected and protected. Thus, it might be difficult for some Americans to think of the United States as a place where human rights violations occur. Historically, the United States has experienced periods when human rights violations occurred. These violations seemed to occur mostly as a result of minority groups being excluded. For example, think of the imprisonment of Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Given the U.S. principles of equality and due process, the international community may have perceived the United States as contradicting its founding principles.

To prepare for this Discussion:

•Review Chapters 4 and 5 in your course text, Universal Human Rights in Theory and Practice and consider Western (U.S) and non-Western conceptions of human rights.

•Review the article "USA: Investigation, Prosecution, Remedy, Accountability for Human Rights Violations in the ‘War on Terror’" and focus on the issues of human rights and the rule of law. http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/asset/AMR51/151/2008/en/5c2ed6d8-c218-11dd-96cb-158126a8c809/amr511512008en.html

•Review the article "Human Rights in the United States" on the Amnesty International website. Take note of the various examples of U.S. human rights violations cited. http://www.amnestyusa.org/our-work/countries/americas/usa

•Select one human rights violation in the United States to use for this Discussion.

•Think of one way in which the violation you selected might affect the global perception of the United States.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post by Day 4 a brief description of the human rights violation you selected. Then explain one way in which the human rights violation might affect the global perception of the United States. Be specific.

Note: Identify the domestic human rights violations you selected in the first line of your post.

Discussion 4
Responses to Human Rights Violations

Responding to human rights violations is a complex undertaking. Deciding factors, such as foreign policy, fiscal limitations, and human rights policies influence whether a response to human rights violations will occur. There are numerous ways to respond to human rights violations. Depending on the violation, response may come from international, national, or local community resources. Sometimes a joint effort is needed to appropriately respond to a violation. For this Discussion, a thorough review of the Learning Resources is required, given the complexity of responses to human rights violations.

Video response on training day – Consider the following: Relativism and how it relates to the criminal justice system, as well as the implications for those that enforce the laws Custom Essay

[meteor_slideshow slideshow=”arp1″]

Video response on training day.

Consider the following: Relativism and how it relates to the criminal justice system, as well as the implications for those that enforce the laws. Relativity poses many dilemmas for the practice of lawmaking. Laws almost always have a moral dimension. In fact, there tends to be a strong consensus among the public concerning the wrongfulness of certain behaviors and the desirability of prohibiting them. Where and when conflict does occur over moral values and appropriate behavior, it is the law that ultimately must supply working answers. The nature of lawmaking is such that certain values must be imposed upon citizens.
Relativism asks us to consider the possibility that there are no true, absolute, objective, or universal moral principles, right or wrong actions, or good or evil characters. In addition, relativism states that we must abandon any search for an ideal ethical system.
Three key claims of ethical relativism are: (1) the factual claim that morality differs from culture to culture, time period to time period, etc., (2) consequently, there is no objective sense of moral right and wrong, and (3) because of these previous two claims, we should not judge the beliefs and practices of other cultures and time periods.
Therefore, according to the previous statements how does the criminal justice system impose morality and laws grounded in ethical doctrine onto a population? Is it “right” and “true” for a government to impose laws onto its citizens if according to relativism there is no way to ascertain good from bad, right from wrong?
• Thus, given the above statements, discuss the concept of “street justice” seen in the film Training Day in relation to the ethical framework of relativism and at least one additional ethical framework: (choose at least one of the following to discuss along with relativism)
• Objectivism, universalism, or legal moralism.
• In your response address the balancing act between “street justice,” morality and lawmaking/ law enforcement when viewed through the lens of relativism and at least one of the other three ethical frameworks you select. You can discuss any aspect of the ethical frameworks, either pro or con, in relation to the different scenarios from the film.
