Using this pattern, students are to identify specific cultural qualities and physical conditions of Huron, followed by an analysis and proposal for the city based upon issues described in this course. Analyze these conditions by making specific, descriptive and thoughtful comparisons to other examples we have studied, such as in nearby towns (Brookings, your own hometown), cities discussed in class (Philadelphia, Rome, Ft Worth), and in architectural or infrastructural projects (i.e. Design Like You Give A Damn project).
In addition, cite your own experiences and identifications in Huron. We have seen many architectural examples in a relatively small place, including the CP Railroad, Dakota Avenue, abandoned or under-used buildings, public parks, and the State Fairgrounds. We have also had several guest speakers with special insight regarding our region, our responsibilities as designers, and on the complexity of urban environments and the building of cities.
In your concluding or “speculative” remarks, propose a “way forward” for Huron. This proposal should be supported by your arguments and direction taken in the first parts of the paper. The proposal may be a physical or architectural one, such as a building type or location. It may be an economic or developmental initiative. It might be a social or political cause, at a large or a small scale, and affecting a wide ranging or narrowly defined demographic. Your speculative proposal should be inspired by your own creativity and imagination, but also limited by the real constraints and conditions that we have come to understand through our continued study of Huron.
