a. EITHER a review of a media text of your choice engaging with issues of multiculturalism, diversity, race relations or cultural difference. This could be a text from film, TV, or fiction. Please contact your seminar tutor if you are not sure if your choice of text is appropriate or not.
Why a review? This will allow students to develop critical and analytical skills of textual analysis, with specific reference to the representation of ‘race’, ethnicity or religion. It will also encourage them to apply theoretical concepts introduced on the module to their analysis of media texts
Aims of the assessment
• to develop students’ critical and analytical skills in their analysis of media representations of ‘race’, ethnicity or religion.
• to encourage students to apply concepts and terms from theoretical discussions on multiculturalism and postcolonialism in their analysis of media texts
• to develop skills of written presentation, with particular regard to structure and academic style
You should use the following as a rough guide for your work:
1. an introduction where you briefly introduce your chosen text and you state your main argument regarding the ‘politics of representation’ of the ethnic or religious group or topic in question
2. the main body of your review should identify the strengths and weaknesses of the chosen text in terms of its representation of the specific group or topic
3. questions that you might want to address in your discussion are:
– what aspects of that particular group/topic are emphasized? what aspects are left out?
– who are the producers and intended consumers of the text? How could that affect the way in which this particular group/topic is represented?
4. your review needs to incorporate relevant theory and criticism introduced on the module (for instance, terms such as ‘orientalism’, ‘hybridity’, ‘mimicry’, etc.)
5. your conclusion should summarise the main points of your discussion
6. you need to also provide a full list of reference in a bibliography.
Assessment Criteria: Review of a Media Text
• evidence of critical and analytical skills in the analysis of media representations of ‘race’, ethnicity or religion.
• evidence of engagement with relevant theoretical concepts and terms in the analysis of media texts
• skills of written presentation, with particular regard to structure and academic style
