paper. Do not include on the reference page. (See APA 6th edition manual for preparation of the Appendix(ces).)
2/2 State Practice Requirements for APN Role (this can be your heading for this section)
Identify individual state where you plan to practice and be licensed. What are the requirements for licensure for your proposed area of
practice and what statutes allow you to practice? Be brief. One or two paragraphs should suffice.
6/6 Conceptualization of Role/Theoretical Support (3 parts with each part constituting a sub-section)
A) *Description of an Advanced Practice Nursing Framework/Model/Theory (from Hamric, Spross, & Hanson text, chapter 2 in 4th
ed.) that provides support for the major concepts of the selected APN role (i.e., the NP, the CNS and collaboration, change,
communication, etc. Pick one framework/model/theory that matches your selected APN role. Be sure to include information from your
interview as support. Use your textbook as a guide for selection. If nothing seems to fit your role, look elsewhere. Hint: Each
framework/model/theory can fit just about any role. It is how you interpret the fit that matters. Justify that your selected
framework/model/theory from Chapter 2 of the text will work for your selected APN role.
B) *Description of the Role-Specific Concept/Subconcept. Identify one (1) concept/subconcept of your specific graduate role (as
noted in coursework) that corresponds to the advanced practice nursing framework/model/theory selected for part A above and tie
to the selected nursing theory (part C). This concept/subconcept must be from a theory studied in this class, for example: change,
communication, collaboration, power, leadership, to name a few. Choose wisely considering what your role will be. You should be able
to find the concept/subconcept listed as part of an APN framework/model/theory in chapter 2 of the text.
C) *Identify a Nursing Theory that provides support for the selected APN role and the selected concept/subconcept you are writing
about.Your nursing theory selection should reflect the concept/subconcept identified in part B. If you are an advanced practice
psychiatric nursing student, you might choose Peplau’s theory. You might choose Martha Roger’s theory or Dorothy Orem’s theory,
but this is your personal choice based on your ability to link the APN framework/model/theory (part A) with the nursing theory (part
C) based on the concept/subconcept identified (part B). In order to tie the three parts together, look for nursing theories with the
same concept/subconcept as the APN role to make it easier to write to/transition within this section.
4/4 Application of Selected APN Framework
*From the selected three parts of the role conceptualization piece above, describe how these parts (APN framework/model/theory,
concept/subconcept, nursing theory) will be used to guide practice. Be specific. Use examples from practice. Provide information from
your interview as support that this application works. This is an excellent place to add in selected thoughts provided by your interviewee
during the interview to support the application of all that you have said previously.
4/4 Research/Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines
*Discuss differences between Research and EBP Guidelines (not in what they are…we already know that). How can each be applied in
practice effectively? Why are both important? Include information from the interview indicating how an actively practicing APN uses EBP
vs. research.
1/1 Provide a Conclusion for paper. Remember that the conclusion summarizes the paper. Do not introduce new information here.
6/6 APA format, spelling, and grammar. Use at least ten references. References must be no later than 5 years ago. If you utilize a classic
reference (original reference dated prior to the past 5 years–example, your theorist [classic {original from the theorist herself} reference preferred
here] Aristotle, Piaget, etc.), it does not count in the 10 current references. References from recent journals usually reflect more current knowledge than texts
(often written two to three years before their publication dates).

Title Page and Reference page. For any errors on these pages, 1 point for each page will be deducted. .25 will be deducted per APA error
noted in the paper up to a total of 6 points for that section of the rubric. Additional points may be deducted if errors contribute to
decreased clarity.
Page limit of 5 double spaced pages using APA guidelines (title page, reference pages, and appendix are not included in the page limit).
A formal paper format with title page, headings, and references is required.
APPENDIX: Contact information for the nurse interview for the paper must be provided in an appendix to the paper. Please list advanced practice nurse’s name, credentials, current clinical site, phone number, email address, and date of the interview. Interviewees will be contacted by the instructor at random.
Submit the paper and turnitin report to the dropbox within the course. Please include your name in the title of the assignment when you upload it to the dropbox. (LASTNAME_AdvRolePaper…etc.; and LASTNAME_ARP_TIIReport…etc.)
Here are some suggestions for maximizing points on the Advanced Roles Paper from your instructor:
1. Review APA. APA style is attention to detail and nurses who pride themselves on clinical excellence clearly have the
skills to master APA. You would pay attention to detail when you provide care to a patient; why not apply some of
that attention to detail to APA style?
2. Explicitly state in third person what your specialty is in the title/introduction of the paper. For the conceptualization
of role/theoretical support section of your paper, review the definitions of conceptual models of your text. Include
concepts and theories in your paper that you have learned in this class.
Be sure that when you describe your framework to support your specific APN role that you include a concept studied in this class: change, communication, collaboration, power and leadership, to name a few. For example, many advanced practice nursing roles involve coaching and guidance. To understand some of the concepts that support the advanced nursing role of coaching, consider the frameworks, theories and models in your text. Choose wisely considering what your role will be when you graduate.
3. No direct quotes are to be used. Learn to use apostrophes, commas, and rules for capitalization. One great resource on

However, this website is NO substitute for your APA style manual. Create tabs in your APA style book on topics that you will need to return to. Your APA style manual should look pretty ragged by the end of your program.
4. Read and reread your paper each day until the due date. Tweak. Reread and rewrite. Writing represents the evolution of
your thinking on a topic and the paper should show the growth of your thinking. The key to good writing is rewriting. It is
hard work and the pay-off will be a higher grade. I know all of you are familiar with hard work. Generalize your work ethic
to your writing. Work to bring your Turnitin similarity score down below 10 or even less. You can reword sections or
eliminate certain phrases that result in a high score. Points will be deducted for high scores. If the scores are too high then
you will not receive credit for your work on this paper.
Most importantly, you are clinical nurse scholars in the making. You are the advanced practice nurses who will chart the future of health care. Good writing ability is just as much of a required skill for nurses in advanced practice as performing a health assessment. Some of you will continue to earn a DNP, DNS, or PhD degrees in the near future. The clarity in writing that you learn at the MSN level will be vital for you in all endeavors. You are now members of the highly literate profession of advanced practice nursing.
In the past, a couple of things have bothered students with the upcoming Roles Paper Assignment. I will try to explain here to help you as I understand the rubric is a little confusing.
1) You will need an appendix. See APA book on how to format and where it goes. All that you need in it is the title Appendix and under that your interviewee’s name, phone number and email address, and place of employment/address. I do spot checks to see that the person was interviewed. I pick at random, so you want to make sure that all the information is there so that I do not have to search. If I cannot find them on the first try and have to look for them, you lose credibility. So, make sure you tell them I might call. No one should panic…I usually just call and thank them for participating in your paper research and make sure you were professional. That’s all. Your grade is not affected by what they say unless they say you did not talk to them at all or they tell me you were not professional in your approach to acquiring the interview or the interview process itself. For the interview, it can be in person or by phone. I would not suggest an email interview. Use the grading rubric to ask them their thoughts on each point you are reviewing for the paper, but don’t read right off the rubric as if it were the first time you have seen the questions.
2) The grading rubric asks for 3 components under theories/frameworks. Here is what you need: You need 1 APN theory/framework/model from Hamrick, Spross, and Hanson (or another source as long as it is applicable and reliable) that provides support for your selected APN role. Identify one concept/subconcept of your specific APN role. This concept must be from a theory studied in this class (change, communication, collaboration, power, leadership…etc.) The last component is the nursing theory. Select your favorite nursing theorist from undergrad (or grad if you have already taken Theory class) or pick the nursing theorist you feel best identifies with the APN theory and subconcepts you chose. Use a primary reference for this theorist – it will be old, but who better to use that the originator? Don’t overthink the process.
Here is an example. I like several of the APN theories because I am a FNP. Because I like simple things, I probably can look at Brown’s Framework for APN and follow it best. However, I can read Shuler’s model and understand it but I have a harder time getting into it because there are so many words. If I were to pick Brown, I would probably pick the subconcept of professionalism or competency or maybe communication. I could then use my favorite nursing theorist, Martha Rogers’ Unitary Human Beings model because one of the concepts is energy field, and I can see how that fits with Brown’s health care environments. As an PEDS nurse, I love Rogers because of the whole therapeutic touch and force field analysis. Have I lost you yet?
If I chose Shuler, I would probably pick something like health promotion or self care as the subconcept because both apply to my role. I could then pick theorists like Pender (health promotion) or Orem (self-care) to really sell it to my instructor. Hint, hint!
I hope that makes sense. If not, Q&A me, and we will get more discussion going.
Now, on to the makeup of the assignment. For the three things I just spoke of, consider that all of that goes into one section with one header and 3 subheadings. Header would be Conceptual Frameworks, or whatever you make up…I don’t really care as long as it is appropriate for what you have written in the section. Then, the subheadings would be Advanced Practice Nursing Framework, Name of the Subconcept (Communication), and the Name of the Nursing Theorist’s Model (Pender’s Health Belief Model). Each subheading could have one to three paragraphs only if you write an intro paragraph under the main heading and a conclusion paragraph that sums up the three subheading paragraphs. Is that clear as mud now?
If you start like that with your outline, often, you can go back in and add more where you see your paper is weak.
