Students should explain their attitude about the issue raised above, build their thesis based on what they already studied about the new writers and new writings , and support their thesis with examples from texts studied in this block.
Students can consider the following guiding questions without feeling the need to answer all of them in any particular order:

? Is Achebe?s argument reflected / supported in his novel Things Fall Apart? Is this argument supported in other texts by other writers?
? Which of the writers you studied in this block support more Achebe?s argument? Which texts may not support this argument?
? How have these new writers dealt with the British legacy? Did they blend it in their writing or rejected it?
? How did they look at their own cultural heritage? Did they embrace this heritage or just saw it as a heritage that would never raise to the standards of the western heritage?
? How did they perceive their own oral literary tradition? Did they see it as equal to the Western written and canonized tradition?
? How do you evaluate the achievement of these new writers? works? Are they contributing to the project of a new national identity or not? Are they offering the readers a new way of looking at literature, culture, and ourselves (Westerns, Easterners, and Africans)?
? To what extent does the evaluation of the achievements of these new writings and new voices depend on the ?ideological side? of the reader as Achebe argues?
? Is this body of new writings homogenous or does it embody differences and dissimilarities that readers should be aware of in their interpretation?
A thesis statement and a proper logical presentation of ideas are necessary.

5. Be aware of how others may present an argument that counterparts your own? Which texts may not fit with your argument?
6. Try to address and engage with the opposing argument
7. In writing your essay make sure you refer to at least two literary works of two different authors and two critical essays.
8. Your analytical comments should follow every time you quote from the text under discussion or the critical material you refer to. This means that you should explain in your own words whatever you quote from other sources.
9. Reference to critical material related to this topic is a must. (You should refer to at least 2 articles from the course).
10. Students should refer and quote from the course audio material whenever possible
11. At this stage, students are expected to know how to paraphrase and synthesize the material they read, using their own words as much as possible. They still have to quote and use quotation marks in the right annotation methods they learned from their tutors.
