Now we are in Analysis Phase, This is the guide line.
As you know we are pretty much following the standard ADDIE model of instructional design: Analysis, Design,
Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. At this level of abstraction, it may resemble a general approach to
solving problems in a host of different fields. More specific models of the ID process, such as that presented in
the popular textbook by Dick, Carey, and Carey, have more specific steps. In fact, we are pretty much following
that one as well.
We are now completing the Analysis Phase of ADDIE, which I define as Needs Assessment, Goal and Instructional
Analysis, Learner and Context Analysis, and Performance Objectives. Others may have slightly different
definitions, but there is always substantial overlap. Next we will move into Designing the instruction.
Notice that in the ADDIE model, the Analysis Phase (AP) can take a lot of time. This is in contrast to other
approaches to instruction, in which one often jumps much more quickly into the actual instruction. In my feedback
to many of you I asked you to do that at this point. The goal of the AP is to gain a detailed understanding of
what we are going to teach, why it is important to teach, who we are going to teach it to, and what the
situations of teaching and performance are. We also want to to have a set of objectives that clearly indicate
what people will know and do at the end of the instruction. Often we have stakeholders sign off on these
objectives when they are complete.
Having all these things in hand will make it possible for us to develop the assessments we will give to students
and design the instruction so that people meet the objectives and do well on the assessments. At least that is
the hope.
There are many questions about this phase. Is it all really necessary? Can it be shortened and simplified? Does
it have to be done every time? What about teachers out there in the field who cannot spend this amount of time
and efort on every lesson?
We will discuss some of those in the discussion boards and come back to them at the end of the semester.
