1) Choose one of the two topics assigned to your tutorial (see file on Blackboard, under the assignment link; you may NOT choose a topic from another tutorial).
2) Use appropriate encyclopedia articles, class readings, or scholarly reviews of the literature for background information about your topic.
3) After you have a working knowledge of your topic, develop a list of useful keywords and phrases that you can use to search for applicable sources in a variety of online databases and/or Google Scholar.
4) Using your key terms/phrases, find ten scholarly (explained further on next page) sources that are relevant to your research topic. You must focus your research on recent publications (those that have been published between 1998-2013). You do NOT need to read them at this time. Choose them based on their title and a quick skim of the abstract.
5) Record all their bibliographic information according to the SAA style guide (http://www.saa.org/AbouttheSociety/Publications/StyleGuide/tabid/984/Default.aspx), also available here SAA style guide, sections 3.9.1 to 3.9.22). In general this includes: author (record ALL authors, no matter how many), year of publication, title of article, name of journal/book/edited book, editor (for edited books only), place of publication (for books only), journal number, page number (for edited books and journals).
6) create a persistent link (PURL or DOI) to each article (this is explained on the university library website at Creating persistent links).
Assignment: Your assignment has three parts. Please use subheadings to divide your paper, use 12 point font and 1.5 spacing:
1. Discussion about search [1 page maximum]:
a) List the keywords and/or phrases that you used for your searches.
b) List all data bases that you used for your searches.
c) Answer this question: Which keywords identified the best/most sources and did some databases identify more or better resources than others? Explain your response; in essence we want a brief commentary on what did or didn’t work for finding relevant references.
