PROCEDURE: Select a journal article (1 point EXTRA CREDIT for Journal of Family and Consumer Sciences articles!), book chapter (other than our textbook!), in-depth newspaper article, or credible on-line source to summarize and critique.
*** Participate in at least one cultural event (on or off campus) to extract cultural significance instead of submitting an abstract. You may choose to critique up to 3 different events in lieu of article ‘abstracts’. Include the same assessment criteria for abstracts in your critique. The global issue of hunger is paramount among the various epidemics affecting individuals. Compounding the challenges of food shortages and catastrophic weather are issues of poverty and increased commodity prices. The UN Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that over 1 billion individuals are undernourished worldwide. Nearly 11 million children die of malnutrition each year when a sum of 25 cents per day could sustain a child through the WFP (World Food Programe) School Feeding Program. The UFWH (Universities Fighting World Hunger) movement combines cooperative group action through a 5-step process of practical reasoning and empowering students dedicated to alleviate the most fundamental detriment to survival and success: hunger.
Eradicating hunger on the international level, or local level, is an issue worthy of action. This research provides a practical and relevant approach to solving this problem through collaborative projects. I believe this is a devastating issue that cuts across all ethnicities and cultures and would benefit from local attention. Chadron State students have the opportunity to combine forces with other institutions.
