In this class, you will complete a research project. You will have the opportunity to choose from several different data sources as part of your project. These data sources provide access to datasets which can be used for developing your own research question and research methodology. From these datasets, you can choose your research question and develop the remainder of your project. Please keep in mind that you cannot collect your own data for your research project. You must use data provided from one of these sources. Here are a few examples of how a research project might be conducted.
As one example, suppose I wanted to study the migration patterns of people in who live in poverty in various areas of the United States? My research question may be something like “do people who live in poverty in the Northeast move with greater frequency then those who live in the South East United States?” My question is rather straight forward. To research this, I can go to the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research. ICPSR is a repository for a wide range of data sources which are available for download and analysis. From here I’l l choose the data tab on the bottom of the page and then search for housing data in SPSS format. From this, I realize that the data reported is by state and not region so I will need to either choose two states that are comparable, or combine these states into a single regional dataset. From this, I can use SPSS to test my question. (This is just one scenario.)
You will need to conduct your own analysis, rather, and use existing reports. These existing reports can provide you with some background but cannot be your own analysis.
Alternatively, let’s suppose you wanted to conduct a meta analysis (Patton takes a great deal about this research method). You are interested in the question “ does sexual abuse treatment programs work?” To answer this question, you decide you will conduct a meta analysis of available peer-reviewed articles in this area in the last ten years. For your coding you will categorize these articles into one of three areas: 1), research confirms the sexual abuse treatment programs work, 2), research confirms that sexual abuse treatment programs do not work or, 3), the research is inclusive. For your data collection, you will read through these reports and categorize the findings into these three categories. For this analysis you will use the databases of peer-reviewed articles available to you through the UNE library. If you are interested in conducting a meta analysis for your course project, please consult with your instructor to gain additional guidance on this approach.
