Argument Essay
Choose a questions, topic, figure or issue that perplexes you. Using at least 10 references,
contemplate your topic or questions into a synthesis of your own. Within your essay, your
position should be clearly understood. With your understanding of the various appeals, evaluate
and address your sources culminating toward a synopsis of the issue. Your essay should include
at least 1 counter argument: clearly defined, evaluated, and rebuttal. Summarize, paraphrase, or
direct quote from your references when needed; do not assume the reader has read your sources.
The quality of your analysis and critical reading processes are the key point of this essay.
As you investigate your topic or question, consider the various formats you could use to further
clarify your purpose. Is your intent to define, solve a problem, show cause and effect, etc. Our
textbook can help with chapters devoted to those specific types of format, check them out.
Another concern is audience. Remember as writer you need to consider what your audience
knows, so you know what to audience needs to know to understand the argument.
Your goal is to achieve your own informed view on that question or topic: a view which reflects
your intellectual wrestling with ideas from your sources and in some way integrates those ideas
with your own independent thinking.
