Students will select an article provided by the instructor. Students will read the article and write a well-thought out critique of the research.
Points to Consider in Writing an Article Critique
Cite the source in APA format at the top of the page.
Write a very short synopsis or summary of the research article’s key purpose and ideas. This summary should be approximately 4-6 sentences. This will be the only section of the critique where a summary is necessary.
Please reference Table 3.8 “Checklist for Evaluating a Qualitative Study” in the Johnson and Christensen text. This checklist provides a list of questions to consider when critiquing a research article.
Questions to consider in the critique of Quantitative Research Design
Introduction
1. Is the purpose of the research clearly stated?
2. Is the research topic specified at the outset of the article?
Method
3. Have the characteristics of the participants, the research site, and the context been accurately described?
4. Is the number of participants large enough?
5. Were the participants treated ethically?
Results
6. Are the findings presented clearly?
7. Is sufficient evidence provided to convince you of the trustworthiness of the findings?
Discussions
8. Are the results discussed in relation to other research in this area?
9. Are the limitations of the study discussed?
10. Have suggestions for future research been provided?
Remember to include your critique of the research design. This is your opportunity to be critical of another researcher’s work. Consider the strengths of the article as well as limitations or weaknesses the research article may have. Use examples from the study to support your arguments. Limit first person when possible. Remember do NOT summarize the article.
