I have to write a philosophical essay about a video documentary we saw on Youtube called “Right to Die, Assisted Suicide, Euthanasia.” Quick summary since the video is an hour long.
Retired university professor Craig Colby Ewert no longer wanted to live. The degenerative motor neuron disease from which he suffered for years had destroyed his ability to walk, was soon to take his ability to talk. He feared not being able to tell anyone whether he suffered; hence, he decided to take his own life, legally, in another country (assisted suicide is illegal in England, where he lived). He died in Switzerland in 2006, after drinking a mixture of sedatives and turning off his ventilator with his teeth. His death was recorded by camera crews for the BBC documentary, Right to Live?, which aired in 2008. The documentary was particularly controversial as showed Ewert’s death – this aired in a country where assisting suicide can lead to up to 14 years in prison.

What do the different moral theories say about Craig Ewert’s situation? Use Bentham’s utilitarianism or principle of utility, ethical egoism, categorical imperative, means-end, natural law theory (w/ doctrine of double effect). Be as detailed as possible. Then logically analyze Ewert’s argument about “playing god.” Be objective and rational in your analysis. Which theory provides the most rational solution. No fallacies in the essay.
In the video about playing god he says, “ventilator is playing god, with out it I would be dead. When premature babies are born they are given medical treatment and so doctors are playing god. Christians never say we have to stop giving organ transplants, we have to stop saving premature babies and we have to let them die. For that it’s ok to play god. It’s only when it might ease somebodies suffering that we can’t play god comes out.”
