My three important attributes that every EMS instructor and health professional must have are Empathy, Self-Motivation, and Teamwork and diplomacy.
Empathy: It means putting yourself in someone else’s shoes, so to speak. As a healthcare professional, it is important to understand the emotions behind the patients’ behavior in order to decide the best way to interact with them. As a educator, you have to be able to understand your students’ feelings in order to best serve those students’ needs. Rather than being impatient or judgmental, focus on nurturing learning.
Self-Motivation: It means doing things that need to be done, rather than waiting to be told to do them. For instance, if you are a paramedic and have a vehicle, make sure it is washed, and do not wait until your partner washes a vehicle. If you are an educator, in a classroom, if a student succeeds in getting a great grade and is rewarded, this stimulates the student to repeat the desirable success.
Teamwork and diplomacy: simply put, an effective communication and a great teamwork allow things to go smoothly. To be a sufficient teamwork, each person on a team, including the team leader, must understand and fulfill his role. Moreover, a team must always keep the patient’s best interests at the forefront.
