Write a report in the form of a guide to other students with the following parts.
Part 1: How to build a simulation of an engine and dynamometer
Explain all the steps needed to build a mathematical model in HTML5 of an engine, and show some results which confirms it works correctly. Implement all parts as accurately as you can (inertia, friction, throttle, etc). You will need to implement controls found on an engine.
Explain and show how you add a dynamometer with variable loads. Improve the graphics and make the visual appearance look like and engine-dynamometer test bed with similar controls and displays. Draw block diagrams and flowcharts of the whole system.
Part 2: How to add a control system
Add different speed-control systems and test their performance, in the following order:
(i) on/off control
(ii) on/off control with hysteresis
(iii) Proportional control
(iv) PID control
(v) Feed forward control
Use different setpoints/step changes/slopes to check your control system. The only engine input that can be altered directly is throttle. Make the “setpoint following” as accurate as possible. Draw block diagrams and flowcharts of each system. State the accuracies you achieved. Include relevant graphs. Include graphs showing how you choose the parameters. Use proportional control alone before you implement the full PID. Explain what happens with the addition of integral control. Explain why the system becomes unstable and why the steady-state error sometimes does not reduce to zero with purely proportional control. Include graphs showing your results. Part 3: Implementing a drive cycle
Choose a control system based on the previous section. Implement a drive cycle so the engine follows the setpoint within limits. Describe how the controller was modified to optimise the response and show your results.
Part 4: Advanced : Add a fuel map
Add a fuel map and show the operating point of the engine at all times. Calculate and display fuel consumption.
This report should not exceed 20 pages of “writing” (plots and appendices are ok) and is worth 100% of the module. Include all code listings and tables in an appendix. The sections are weighted equally.
