In your analysis of the text, you need to use Gee’s ‘building tasks’ and ‘tools of inquiry’. The application of the matrix based on these techniques that was introduced in Week 3 of the course is likely to be useful for this purpose. You are also expected to read more widely than the set text and the readings. Additional references would be particularly applicable to the implications for use of this analytical framework in your practice.
The following headings are recommended in structuring your report:
Introduction: In this section include information about the text—what it is, its source and other relevant information (e.g. the authors). These details should be included in the reference list at the end of the report, but before the appendices. You also need to include a short rationale for the selection of this particular text.
Text analysis: In this section, you need to organise the information from the application of Gee’s techniques into a number of sub-sections that are relevant. For example, if Gee’s notion of identity and Discourses are a key feature of the text, then you will need to highlight these aspects in your analysis. Sub-headings may be a useful way of organising the information.
Implications for practice: In this section you need to indicate how your text and analysis might be used productively in an adult literacy and/or numeracy course.
References: In this section, list all the authors of books, chapters and articles that you cited in your report and the details of the cited publications.
Appendices: In this section, attach:
the original text, if this is possible (as Appendix A);
the completed matrix and the results of the employment of Gee’s other analytical techniques (as Appendix B, C, etc.).
