One tool that may be useful in understanding different ways of looking at the world is a personality assessment. These assessments are based on positivistic theories that suggest that the way that a person answers the assessment questions is related to certain ways that they may have a propensity to behave. With the ever-increasing trend of globalisation, it would appear that the workplace will continue to become more and more diverse and that this diversity may also be associated with a variety of different ways of making sense of the world. An example of this diversity is depicted in this week’s media.

Leaders will need to be cognizant of individual differences and be able to foster the creation of a shared sense-making in the workplace.

To prepare for this discussion, complete the diagnostic tool, The Big Five Assessment (http://www.outofservice.com/bigfive/, http://test.personality-project.org/ ), to assess your own personality and gain an understanding of similarities and differences in how people make sense of their surroundings. In addition, review this week’s media resource and reflect on how Susan, Mark, and John differed both in their Big 5 results and how they made sense of the situation presented. This information may be useful as a starting point to understanding how to bridge differences to create a shared understanding among people in the workplace.

•Choose a friend, colleague, or associate and have him or her complete the same questionnaire. Based on your results, compare how you and your friend, colleague or associate might make sense out of a particular conflict situation differently.
•Given these results as well as what you learned from watching this week’s media, how would you describe the relationship between personality types as measured by diagnostics such as The Big 5 and being an effective ‘sense maker’ for your organisation?
