Print and Broadcast Media Analysis.
Students must chose a news event which took place in the last twelve months. The news item will need to be significant enough that it is reported by a variety of different media over at least a three days (could be consecutive or not). This provides you the opportunity to compare and contrast the nature of the reporting of this event over a news cycle and across different mediums.
Once you have chosen an event please gather a variety of media reports/articles from:
� Print � if possible broadsheet and tabloid
� Online
� Television
� Radio
� Social Media � if possible and/or relevant
Put together a journal of this media. Electronic versions are fine with links to files and/or cut and pasted articles.
Then proceed with a 2000 word analysis of the following issues. This analysis does not need to be constructed as an essay. It can be presented as a combination of paragraphs and dot points.
Issues to be considered:
� News angles and news criteria
� Quality of construction strength of lead, selection of quotes, overall organisation of information, Inclusion of actuality, interviews etc., use of print/broadcast language.
� Reflection on the process of gathering sources and interview material
� Visual/audio elements pictures, headlines, video, audio etc
� Position of the stories in the publication/bulletin
� Change in approach over news cycle
� Differences between the mediums
� Effectiveness of the various mediums
This assignment is worth 30%.
