Brain Storm Your Topic
Brainstorm a list of five possible topics and compose a thesis statement for each possible topic. Post this list to the discussion board.
After you have selected your possible topic, to help you in starting your persuasive essay, draft an outline of your persuasive argument. This outline should identify the following sections:
1. Thesis Statement
o Identify topic
o State your stand on this topic
2. First Body Paragraph
o Include your first item of support for your thesis, either a personal story, a fact, or a statistic.
3. Second Body Paragraph
o Include your second item of support for your thesis, either a personal story, a fact, or a statistic.
4. Third Body Paragraph
o Include your third item of support for your thesis, either a personal story, a fact, or a statistic.
5. Fourth Body Paragraph
o Introduce one counterclaim, explaining why someone might disagree with your thesis but why you believe that person would be wrong.
6. Conclusion
o Summarize your main idea and your strongest points here
You are welcome to include additional paragraphs with support and/or counterclaims in your outline and in your essay. While your outline is intended to help you in writing your essay, you do not need to follow it exactly. As you write the essay you may determine that the original order you planned is not successful or that you have additional support for your argument that requires an additional paragraph. Your outline is only intended to help you to develop your argument and to serve as preparation for the final draft.
