As I mentioned during class on April 29th, we will be conducting “breaching experiments” this week. Since there is no reason to repeat what we talked about during lecture, here is a link to an article that provides a tidy summary about the methods and goals of breaching experiments:
The writing assignment for this week, which is due by will require you to conduct a breaching experiment and write up your findings. The written document you submit must have two parts.
The first part is a description (the who, what, where, when, why) of the breach you conducted. I don’t want any analysis or evaluation of other people’s behaviors or your own. For this part of the write up, I just want you to describe the breach in as much hard-boiled detail as you can.
The second part of this write up is analytical. I want you to (1) identify the social norm you have breached, (2) discuss how other people responded to your breach of the norm, and analyze the “repair work” of other people (stares, eye rolling, aggression or hostility toward you, among many others) in order to bring the situation you breached back to “normal.”
Additionally, be sure to incorporate material from the lecture on the two
key debates in sociology. Specifically, you should discuss how your
findings speak to the core issues within each of the two debates (i.e.
social constructionism vs. essentialism and choice vs. constraint).
The first and seconds parts must between 400-500 words. Total length of
this assignment: 800-1000 words, written up in a Microsoft Word
document. And, as per, submit to EEE before May 6th, 4:30pm.
*Remember, do not do anything illegal. A good breach does not hurt
anybody or do damage to property, etc, etc. Breaches are done in the
spirit of “serious play.”
