Combined the group has 11 albums go platinum, and 1 gold. (Wiki) They are each successful within their own respective genre, however they are all connected by one thing. Each of these four artists had their careers advanced by the popular Fox reality television show, American Idol. American Idol started its first season in June of 2002, and is currently entering its 13th season this January. Simon Cowell, who was one of the shows three original judges along with Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul, started the show based off of the British series Pop Idol. The show tremendously impacted the way that unknown American artists could take their careers to the next level.
American Idol brought viewers the sense of an underdog. Contestants came only with a story, something that set them apart. Something that made it almost unbelievable that a person with no fame but simply a hidden talent could be sky rocketed to stardom over the course of a television season. America loves a true underdog story, and seemingly every contestant fit the bill. Many viewers found themselves supporting various contestants for a multiple of reasons. They would always watch not only their performances every week, but also the performances of the competition. Unbeknown to the viewer, they were being shown a variety of different genres and learned to appreciate or at the very least respect them in their own way. This may not be the intended goal of the program, however indirectly educated audiences on various genres. For example, a family of four could watch the show and hear a classic rock artist, much like what the parents grew up with, a country musician, to satisfy the young daughters Taylor Swift obsession, and a Pop/Rock style singer that made it cool for the growing older son to like Justin Timberlake again. Wile each enjoyed their favorite genre; they still tuned into the other contestants to at the very least gauge what competition their beloved artist had to face. Simultaneously, they were exposed to music they might have never listened too, and saw how others appreciated it.
For this reason alone I believe that American Idol had a positive impact on our musical culture and our tastes. Many critics get caught up in the fact that American Idol leads to non-professionals believing they can judge singing or music without any experience in the field. I personally believe they are looking beyond the point and don’t realize the good that it has brought by diversifying Americas playlist. I know my sister was not a Country fan or would ever consider listening to a Country genre until she saw Carrie Underwood take the stage in the fourth season of American Idol. For it is this is only one basic example of how American Idol changed the musical tastes of many viewers, and gave them an opportunity to be exposed to various genres they may have never had before.
