Case Study Analysis Paper
This assignment presents two case studies related to employee selection and performance evaluations which you review and write a paper on.
To complete the assignment, do the following:
1.Read each case study below and answer the questions that follow it. Note that the questions are not the same for both studies.
2.When answering the questions, apply the information you have learned in this module and support your arguments with research and solid critical thinking.
3.Using your responses to the questions write a paper of 1,000–1,250 words in which you discuss the two case studies found in “Module 5 Case Studies,” Each case study should represent approximately half of the paper.
i. The paper should include an introduction.
ii. Discuss each case study separately and they should represent approximately half of the paper. Support your argument for each case study with research and solid critical thinking.
iii. The paper should include a conclusion.
•Prepare this assignment according to the APA guidelines found in the APA Style Guide. An abstract is not required.
Module 5 Case Studies
Case Study 1:
Three employees were fired from the Giganto Department Store in Somewheresville for violating the store policy about using coupons. The store sent each employee 11 coupons (for15% off) as part of a “friends and family” sale. There were a lot of extra coupons, so the three employees gave the coupons to customers who did not have them. They assumed that since there were extra coupons, they were free to give them to whomever they chose. A few days later, the person in charge of store security interrogated one of the employees, telling her she would have to pay the store $1,000 to cover the coupons she gave to customers or the store would call the police and have her arrested. She was asked to sign a document that barred her from returning to the store for the next year. All three employees were terminated from the store’s employ.
Case Questions:
1)Discuss whether or not and why or why not the store had just cause to terminate these employees.
2)What assumptions were made regarding the store’s employee training and the subsequent performance appraisal of the employees in question?
3)Were those assumptions fair and accurate?
4)How might this situation have been handled differently if leaders had approached it with a training and development mindset?
Case Study 2:
The City of New Oldtown was developing a system to select police officers. One of the tests it selected was the Wonderlic Personnel Test, a psychological test measuring cognitive ability that was mentioned in the text readings. For each occupation, the Wonderlic provides a minimum score and a maximum score. For police officers, the minimum score is 20 and the maximum is 27. One applicant for a job as a police officer was not given an interview because his score of 33 made him “too bright” to be a cop.
Case Questions:
1)Why do you think the city of New Oldtown did not want to hire highly intelligent people?
2)Is it discriminatory to not hire people who are highly intelligent? Why or why not?
3)Is the use of psychological testing appropriate in this setting? Why or why not?
4)How would you have determined the cognitive ability requirements for this job?
