Case Study
Nick is 14 years old. His father died when he was 5.His mother never remarried and has never really come to terms with her husband’s death. She is often depressed and drinks to excess on occasions. She has struggled financially and has had to work long hours to make ends meet. Nick has always been very close to his mother,more so after the death of his father when he became very dependent on her. His mother would always refer to him as her “little man” and would allow him to sit at his father’s place at the dinner table and would indulge his fantasies about wanting to “marry her when he grew up”.

Nick was close to his father and would always follow him around. He found his death very confusing and for a long time would wait at the gate for his father’s return from work. For a year after his father’s death,Nick wet the bed and became quiet and withdrawn.

Nick has an older brother and an older sister,18 and 20 respectively. He is not very close to his siblings as they are quite a bit older than him and they believe their mother has always spoiled him compensate for the loss of their father. His 18 year old brother is in year 12 at the same school as Nick and is held in high esteem at the school for his academic and sporting prowess. His sister is in her second year of university.

At primary school,however,Nick was often in trouble for being disruptive. He became the class clown and his mother was often called to the school about his behaviour. Nick struggled with his school work and seemed to have difficulty making friends. He was rarely invited to parties and would spend a lot of time alone in the playground.

Nick is now in year 8 and is having trouble with his school work. His disruptive behaviour continues,but his ability to make other students laugh in class has made him friends among the other disruptive students. He uses this disruptive ability as a status symbol and his bad behaviour increases with the encouragement of the other students. He is regularly on detention and has begun to wag school.

His year adviser has begun to take a special interest in Nick and is beginning to spend time with him and is encouraging him to join sporting and drama activities as an outlet for him. Nick is finding that he has a real talent for drama and cricket and wants to pursue these activities but is fearful of discussing this with his mother as he doesn’t wish to burden her financially.
