Charles Murray’s article appeared in the Jan 21, 2012 edition of the Wall Street Journal. It’s a summary of the argument he makes in his book Coming Apart: The State of White America, 1960 – 2010. His book addresses what he sees as a disturbing trend: the increasingly dissimilar lives led by those at opposite ends of the economic scale. Unlike 50 + years ago, it’s not just money that separates us; it’s values. To emphasize his argument that social inequity in America is based on class, not race, he contrasts upper-middle white Americans with working class white Americans. He places great importance on the difference in marriage rates between these groups ( 83% vs. 48% ), and he includes parenthood, industriousness, and academic achievement as well.
