For this paper, it would be an analytical research paper, containing problem statement and claim (arguments), instead of summarizing secondary sources. I would need 5 secondary sources. The paper is about Raymond Carver?s short stories, so it has to refer to the stories too. The stories are the primary sources, which is not included in the 5 (secondary) sources earlier. The stories recommended are ?A Small Good Thing?, ?Where I?m Calling From?, and ?Cathedral?. The collection of the stories that need to be researched is also called ?Cathedral?, the name of the last story?s title in that collection.
I need the research on why the whole collection is called Cathedral. That would probably be the problem statement. Is it because Carver?s life is getting more hopeful? He was an alcoholic, having 2 parts of life: the alcoholic and the recovered alcoholic. By the time he wrote the collection (Cathedral), he was living his 2nd life, the recovered alcoholic. He joined the AA (Alcoholic Anonymous) for rehabilitation; there he found a miracle, leaving his life in the care of the higher power. However, he was never a believer in religion in the first place. Could it be his spirituality that changed?
So for this paper, it would be how alcoholism affect Carver?s life and work (the stories), the change in his life, and reason the collection is called Cathedral: change in spirituality, hope, or something else? It would be great to refer to his biography at some point in the essay to show how his life reflected his work. Contrasting the stories in the collection is recommended, however; only use the stories in that collection. Stories in the collection: Feathers, Chef?s House, Preservation, The Compartment, A Small Good Thing, Vitamins, Careful, Where I?m Calling From, Fever, and Cathedral. Please ignore any information found in the secondary sources regarding other stories that are not listed above, because these other stories have never been discussed in class.

2. My professor demands specific problem statement and claim, so let me know if the one I provided is too broad. I initially wanted to go with how his life is reflected in his work, but then he asked for a more specific one like why the collection is called Cathedral instead. I think he wanted me to write on Carver?s change in life and spirituality, which result in the change in the stories in that collection (from the depressed hopeless stories early on, to the hopeful bright one at the end of the collection such as the Cathedral)
