Students will create a 5-7 page Claim with Reasons Essay using five scholarly, academic, peer-reviewed sources to provide evidence for their thesis. Students will present a three-part thesis statement; each of the three parts will be backed up in the essay with at least three pieces of evidence. Students will analyze and evaluate a historic decision and state whether that decision was right or wrong, backing up their assertion with evidence from scholarly sources, synthesizing their thoughts and sources into a well-researched essay. The essay must demonstrate an understanding of MLA style and standard written English. The thesis statement will explain how “This leader’s decision to _____was____(correct or incorrect)_______because______________.” For the thesis of this essay, three reasons must be given. For each reason, at least 3 examples must be given.
Evaluation: The essay will be evaluated on how well the student:
• Evaluates and synthesizes sources
• Puts the essay into proper MLA style
• Organizes the essay including an effective thesis statement and effective topic sentences
• Creates an original claim using evidence to persuade the reader
